vogel als prophet (video)
on: April 09, 2007, 10:45:08 AM
this is my first recording on PS so any comments would be gratefully received. i'm not 100% happy with this myself. i've only JUST learned the middle section so i don't feel like i'm doing much with it other than playing the notes. plus my pedalling is a little inconsistent. i'm thinking of posting up a new and improved version soon. but anyway, i'd be very happy to hear what anyone else thinks about this and how i can improve it.

...hahaha are you serious? The middle chorale is the one to DIE for! So if you are just playing the notes, I trust you won't play it that fast in the end :)

I think you have grasped the notes fine. Your top voice does sing too - in fact, the voicing also sound quite good!

I can sometimes see where you want to go with phrasing and dynamics - some quite good ideas there, but they rarely translate to the actual sound produced. This is where I would look for improvements.

Otherwise, great! Post the reworked version sometime!

I think, in this piece the tempo has to change a lot and often. The listener should not even notice the simple 1 2 3 4 bar scheme. This piece is (should be) complete out of time and space. And don't play with full sound, birds are very shy  ;)
If it doesn't work - try something different!

thanks for your comments!

i have to say (and i don't know if this is unusual or not) but each successive time i've heard my recording i've hated it more and more!!! i totally agree about the dynamics. i think dynamic shifts are necessary in this piece. and while it may be somewhat due to the poor recording equipment it seems to me that while i'm playing i imagine that i'm doing more with the dynamics than i actually am. so i'll definitely try and rework that and come up with a recording that i'm a little happier with. as for the middle section, i still don't know exactly what i'm going for (as i said before, i've only just learnt it) but it's such a beautiful melody that there's plenty to work with.

anyway, thanks for taking the time to listen and respond. i'll be posting more recordings up the next few days. (it's all chopin: a nocturne, a mazurka and a couple of preludes. plus i also have an etude that i could post up if i bother to work through it again.)
