Looking for encore piece
on: April 11, 2007, 05:21:12 AM
I'm performing my senior recital in a few weeks, and want to add a short encore piece (just in case).

My program is

Prelude and fugue in E minor, op. 35 no. 1 - Mendelssohn
Waldstein Piano Sonata, op. 53 - Beethoven
Prelude for piano - Aldag (short modern piece by a school composer)
Three Intermezzi, op. 117 - Brahms
Hungarian Rhapsody no. 2 - Liszt

Is it too late to even think about adding one more piece? I was thinking something short (3 minutes or less) that non-classical music people might recognize. I learn and memorize music rather quickly, as long as it's not too difficult.

(I'm new to this forum, but I've already found lots of interesting information. Great place!)
Current recital rep (4/27/07)
Prelude & fugue in E minor, op. 35/1 - Mendelssohn
Waldstein sonata - Beethoven
Drei Intermezzi, op. 117 - Brahms
Hungarian rhapsody no. 2 - Liszt

I would do Chopin etudes exp..op.10 no.5 or op.25 no.9 short but flashy
encore type...but maybe not so popular as fantasie impromtu....but much better for me
and of course you can learn it in a few weeks

edit....and waldstein is op.53 not 54

How about one of Joplin rags, or Gershwin's Rialto Ripples, or one of his own song arrangments like "I got Rhythm".
Good luck with the recital.

Something they will recognize?

Maple Leaf Rag, but try to find Joplin's piano roll version.  Gives it a different twist.

Maybe you can try a transcription of  "fly me to the moon" for piano  - a wonderful love song

if you had the time to learn it well enough i think the ideal encore piece, bearing in mind your programme , would be a BRAHMS HUNGARIAN DANCE. numbers 5 or 6 are household famous pieces, so i'd recommend one of those to please the non-classical listeners. number 1 is my personal favourite but maybe not quite as famous (also it's harder). they are quality virtuoso pieces which nobody could accuse of being banal. I think it would follow on perfectly from your programme, after your Brahms and then the Liszt with the Hungarian flavour.
they are not easy however (i'm learning them for concert right now), which is why i express reservation about how much time you have. i guess it depends how fast you learn. if you are doing the Hungarian rhapsody no.2 you obviously are at the right level, the difficulty is very similar although the dances of brahms are shorter, 2-3 mins which is the ideal length you are looking for.  No.5 in f# minor is the most famous and the easier of the two, also very easy to memorize, but the challenge is hitting the right notes at full speed and dynamics!
good luck whatever you choose, i think your recital programme is very cool by the way  :D
do post and tell us all how it goes

Chopin's Valses in D-flat or C#minor.
