If you only got 25mins, i would go for the Weber ConcertStuck.

Its a little belter.

I think it's JUST within the 25-minute mark.

Btw, in case I am incorrect,

If you only got 25mins, i would go for the Weber ConcertStuck.

Its a little belter.

Thal

I would second that.

im entering a competition in which you have to play a concerto that lasts no longer than 25 minutes. anyone know of any good ones that arent by rachmaninov?

Bach F minor, D minor.
Haydn D major.
Any Mozart.
Saint-Saens #4 is about 27:30m, if you play it a little faster, or cut or push through some Tuttis, you can reduce it to 25m. It's a beautiful and virtuosic concerto.
Rhapsody in Blue would be about 16-17 minutes, complete with no cuts.
I Got Rhythm variations would qualify too.
Strauss Burlesque is about 17:30 minutes.
Warsaw Concerto would qualify too, depending on how "light"/"popular" you can go in this competition.
Wishing you good luck,
Rami

Which competition is this?  I think Saint-Saens #5 would qualify.  Also anything by liszt or Ravel LH.

Bartok Concerto No. 1
Liszt Totentanz
Liszt Concerto No. 2
Prokofiev No. 1
Prokofiev No. 5
Either Ravel Concerto
Mozart No. 20
Mozart No. 24

Don't play anything too obscure (like aforementioned Scriabin or Weber) or too technically easy (like aforementioned Scriabin, Bach, Haydn, Gershwin)- very rarely a good idea for the concerto in a competition.

I'd so suggest the Barber but its obscurity will probably count against you.

Erm, no it wasn't. Sunwook Kim won by playing Brahms 1.

Still a cracking piece though!

Be quite careful about playing Mozart, if you're considering that. Two of the finalists at Leeds did, and it made their lives very difficult - going for grace and delicacy when everyone else was doing fireworks. It's down to judges of course and theoretically that shouldn't matter... but if everyone else is showing off it can be quite hard to make Mozart sound quite so impressive.

Good luck!

I borrowed a CD some time ago - a most WONDERFUL, DAUNTING, DISTURBING and HAUNTING concerto by Alfred Schnittke. Haven't heard such an emotion-intensive piece in quite a long time...
Plain... scary. No, not plain. Beutiful and scary at the same time. Made me feel pretty uneasy.
Holy cow, what an experience. My spine still tingles when I remember the opening notes.

There's a video of this going around on the demonoid torrent site...

I would say De Greef's second piano concerto... or one of Reineck's concertos if you want something a bit different.
I really don't have a clue what they look for in competitions but I'd have thought Shostakovich's second piano concerto would fit the bill. And if a Mozart one was needed, No. 17 is my favourite.
Working on: Schubert - Piano Sonata D.664, Ravel - Sonatine, Ginastera - Danzas Argentinas

rhapsody on a theme of paganini is extremly difficult dont get me wrong...but i think the difficulty is a LITTLE overrated if youve ever seen the score youd know what i mean.

not that i could play it  8)

It's a amazingly difficult piece. The last variation is a total Killer!! and variation 15 is an evil variation. Andvariations 19 20 21 22 23 are no walk in the park either. I'm sure elevate can do it though  :)

Prokofiev 1. Great piece and audiences love it.

I would be tempted to do Mozart. If you play it well that will almost guarantee a victory, becasue it shows great maturity and virtuosity to play a Mozart concerto well. However it could also go horribly wrong! lol

I agree with rob47.

The Franck Symphonic Variations is a lovely masterpiece, sadly underrated, IMHO.
