This is a rhetorical question anyway because what is considered "normal" is just too unbelievably, unecessarily and tediously SLOW !!!

Shortcuts is a bad mentality, the implication is to get results without putting in the necessary work - that just won't happen.  Looking for shortcuts is to cheat yourself from having a solid foundation, at best that could result in becoming something of a one trick pony.

So your teacher replies: practice

A good question to ask from there is how best to practice?

It's not a matter of shortcuts, better practice is what'll get you better results.  Long story short - you want to be focused with every moment on solving the problem in front of you.  Day by day, the problems vanish, new ones take their place, and you get better.

There are more efficient and less efficient ways to practice, and quite a number of web sites now that discuss this fairly well.

Efficient practice isn't really a short cut, but it can reduce a lot of wasted effort.

You've got some good responses to this question; in particular, RC's reply to you could be wrapped up and have a ribbon tied around it and shared with thousands of students. I loved that answer. Shortcuts can and will cheat you if they become your way. The value is in the time put in. You are involved in an art form. If da Vinci was always looking for shortcuts, how would the Mona Lisa have turned out? :  )
Nice forum here - better than nice actually.

Agreed.  Looking back, I'm not sure if you were asking a question or what it might be.  Is english your first language?
