Need piece that is mostly left hand
on: August 25, 2002, 01:21:05 AM
Hi all--does anybody know of a piece (other than Chopin's Revolutionary Etude) that is mostly for the left hand?  I don't mean pieces that are arranged for the left hand ONLY.  I mean something similar to Revolutionary Etude, where there is SOME right hand, but one that is MOSTLY (not all) left hand.  Please name exact opus numbers.  Thank you SO much! :) :)

ummm.....you can try Rachmaninoff's etude tableaux op.33 n. 2, his prelude in e minor from thirteen preludes op. 32, and prelude in e flat M from ten preludes op. 23. For Chopin, etude op. 10 n. 9, and op.25 nr. 10  is a great lh workout, but right hand does the same work--same as op. 25 n. 12. Also, Ravel's Une Barque Sur L'ocean from Miroirs is great for lh.
Good luck!

Hi Janice!
Try Scriabin's Prelude for the Left Hand, no. 1, op. 9!    :)

Do you know the Liszt f-min etude (no.10)?? I know that it doesn't appear to be for the left hand but it does give it quite a workout!!! If you're up for a challenge i would suggest this one- i must just warn you that it is a tad more difficult than the revolutionary. ;)

Since there seems to be alot of new people on the forum, I thought that I would submit this again, and see if anyone has some more ideas.  And you can read the old suggestions if you want to go back to my old post under "Student's Corner".  I am so thankful for those suggestions, and I am open to more!  Thanks! :) :)

Look at Scriabin Etude in D sharp minor op 8 no 12 and Rachmaninoff Moment Musical op 16 in E minor.
Cheers

Hi
This may be an obvious one but have you tried Chopin's Prelude No.3 Op.28, it's very short but the left hand doesn't stop throughout.

Try Ravel's Concerto for the Left hand.
You need more than a piano, two hands and a brain to play music.  You also need hot sauce.

Unless you mean "virtuoso pieces" only, you also could find suitable for your purpose those ones where the left hand carries the melody, for example, Chopin's Prelude Op 28 #6, and Etude Op 25 #7. Maybe also pieces having plentiful arpeggiatted accompanyment and simple -though intense- melodies, such as Rachmaninoff's Elegie, Field's Nocturne #14 in G, and Liszt's Consolation #3.

Well I have two suggestions:

- Scriabin wrote a Prelude for the left hand alone; it's in his Opus 9 set.  It's in C-sharp minor and is absolutely gorgeous (if played properly).  It's amazing how you can basically sight-read up to tempo with both hands, but take away the right hand and it's quite tough, despite being marked "andante."

- Chopin etude Op. 25 No. 7, also C-sharp minor, marked "lento."  Clearly focuses on the left hand, and reminds me of an inverted Nocturne.  Long, longggg scale passages in the left hand with right hand accompaniment.

...And I just read the replies and saw that both of them were already suggested.  Oh well.  ::)

But you complement very well such replies, SteinwayTony, with interesting comments, and also reinforce the suggestions.

Try Alkan's study for the Left Hand.
