Clementi's Gradus ad Parnassum
on: March 05, 2004, 08:58:32 PM
This set of 100 pieces are arguably the most didactic pieces in the piano repetoire.  Yet, not that many people know about them.  My question is does anyone know whether are any CD's that has all 100 pieces?

Saving the planet ... (recycling old thread)

I finally was able to purchase & download mp3s of Danielle Laval's complete traversal of this work, not without considerable difficulty. For some reason the iTunes and Amazons restrict availability of this album to European and Japanese customers only. Thanks to Media Markt I can now listen to this music.

At any rate, this is not your Clementi of the Op. 36 Sonatinas. This is a collection of 100 pieces of varying styles and scales (from half a minute to 10 minutes), spanning five decades of the composer's lifetime. Clementi (born 1752) published these works in three volumes (1817, 1819, 1826). The young Chopin would publish his Op. 10 set sometime later in 1833.

Laval makes a very convincing case for these works. I'm hooked  :D
