Stradivarius imitations
on: May 04, 2007, 03:32:01 AM
What does everyone think of Nagyvary's new Stradivarius imitations?  He claims to have reproduced the sound exactly.  Take a listen:

the bach fugue is the stradivarius.  you cannot replicate them.  (at least that's what i thought).  the other sounds, well - semi- ok - but only in the right conditions.  say - everyone else has a quality 2 instrument.

i hope i'm right.  also, i think the serenata is the stradivarius.  the other seems to not hold pitch well at the high end.  the gavotte also sounds like a stradivarius.

also, i think the nagyvary looks terrible.  the varnish is ugly.  the decor of the violin matches the sound.  sorry.  i don't like it.  i'm very picky.  (hope he doesn't charge too much for these).

and, i hope i'm right about which was the stradivarius.

Why didn't she play the same movement with both instruments?

Good question, Josh.

More replies, please!  I know pianos are supposed to be the main topic, but violins are cool.

Hey, you know, we should have a competition.....record lots of different pianos and then whoever can identify them by brand gets a prize.  Like 5 bucks in iTunes or maybe some hand lotion.

Good idea.  I have some nasty hand lotion that I'd like to give away.  Free from Mary Kay.  2 of them actually.

In thinking about this, all I could think of was the logistics of mounting such a competition.  Surely the scale of it would warrant more than a prize of $5 and hand lotion?  What happens if 20 people get the answers correct?  Lottery?

Hmmm.....

Well, I don't think 20 people would get them correct.....identifying Masons, Steinways, Bluthners etc. by brand just from a CD would be SO HARD.  I've never even heard a Bluthner.

I think the logistical problems would arise mostly from getting recordings of the different brands.  You'd have to fly all over to get the different brands.  There's not a Bluthner in my whole state...or a Bechstein or a Steingraber.

I don't know......what's an appropriate prize?  Whatever it is someone has to pay for it, and until we find that, the competition will only be for recognition, or maybe amanfang's mary kay lotions.

That was my thinking as well.  :)
