Graduate audition (just a plan)
on: May 05, 2007, 07:52:18 PM
  Dear fellows:
  Excuse me for not giving specific details about where I want to study, because actually I don't know this yet.  :P Anyway, despite some minute requirements, the general MM admission repertoire seems to be the standard: baroque-with-fugue/classical sonata/major 19th century work/random 20th work. So, assuming that, what follows is an initial idea:

 - Bach: Prelude and fugue BWV 889 (A minor from WTC book 2);
 - Mozart: Sonata K 332;
 - Chopin: Scherzo 2;
 - Debussy: Preludes 6, 9 and 12 from book 1.

 What do you think?
 Furthermore, if somebody is acquainted with the ABRSM diplomas, is this repertory similar to the "Dip" level?
 Thanks in advance for any thoughts or commentaires. Best!

 Dear Pies:
 That's something I really want to do. You could imagine how much I like Ligeti's Etudes. Anyway, I don't think I'm able to render a set of them properly. Maybe a couple of years more.
 Thanks for your comment. Best!

The a minor from WTKII is an excellent choice.

 Dear Pita:
 Yeap... I'm very fond of this particular P&F. However, I wonder if a three-voice fugue (in place of a four-voice) fits the standard required for this purpose. What do you think?

I doubt it will matter. There are 3-voice fugues that are way harder than 4-voice ones. (see D#m, Book I)

I like the Mozart and the Debussy. I'm kind of more partial to the 3rd and 4th scherzi personally, but the 2nd is still good, if quite overplayed.

Audition panels ask for Bach preludes and fugues to see how well you can maintain control and clarity under pressure. Four voice fugues are effective for this purpose but they have a tendency to drag and get boring. I think as long as you can pull off that brutal a minor fugue with precision and clarity you'll be fine. Best not smudge any of the fingerwork...
