Benefits of playing left hand music?
on: March 09, 2004, 12:14:19 AM
I am perfectly capable in both hands, but i wonder if learning music for solo left hand would improve my playing at all.
Many people ignore their left hand's expressive capabilities, and when there are passages in a both hands piece where the left hand takes a prominent role, people have difficulty.
so are there any benefits in playing/learning music for solo left hand?

Why dont you try Chopins Op 10-12 and Op 25-7? and then you will find how to use the left hand  ;D

I LOVE left-hand music, they are very helpful in developing a good, even left hand touch. Sure, some two-handed pieces have tough left hand parts, but when you play with just left hand, 100% of your attention can go to it and you can hear things a lot better. Find Schirmer's book "Piano Music for One Hand." It's the starting place.

My left hand sucks.  I'm right hand dominant and brush my teeth with my right hand, write with my right hand, play the dominant melody with my right hand...

See, everything is done with the right hand.  Only a minority of people are lefty's.

So benefits of playing left hand music?
You should probably give some examples of left hand music so I know to play those cause, as my post started, "my left hand sucks."

godowsky's studies on chopin's etudes contain some of the most advanced  left hand music ever composed.
the best ones to start with though are the left hand etude by blumenfeld, and the left hand prelude by scriabin.
