on: May 08, 2007, 04:35:18 AM
There's a video on youtube of a 16 year old girl playing the Prokofiev Toccata in 3:48 seconds... that's all I have to say, I can't describe how fast it is... this should be under amazing youtube videos but can't find the thread... she also plays Chopin 10/2 and Feux Follets SO DAMN FAST what@@

Claire Huangci. She studied with Sokoloff at Curtis. I've always enjoy listening to her. She takes risks and has a real personality at the keyboard. She is competing in the Queen Elisabeth this year.

Argh, there are some parts in that piece that don't seem manageable at half the speed she plays it, I can't hit my wrist on a table at that speed for more than a minute anyways :p

Is that the same as Sokolov?

What competition circuit?  Do you mean to say she's possibly the BEST pianist currently competing?  Them's strong words...  ::)

What else have you heard her play besides a fast toccata?

The Toccatta looks like a video from the Hamamatsu (sp?) competition in Japan last year. There used to be a live link to all the performances thats expired now.

Exceptional talent.

lol I wouldn't go as far as saying she's the 'best', but you can't ignore the fact that she has MAD repertoire for just being 16...  3rd chop sonata, feux follets, don juan, paganini rhapsody, etc...

I love Huangci!  The only reason that she doesn't always get far is because I think that her tone and interpretation can somtimes be a little "too" individual, at least to the judges at these competitions.

Her style fits this peice perfectly... no seriously.  How she does that crazy thing with the pedal where she gets louder and then OMG OMG TENSION... and soft... and work your way... back...... UP..... down.  My favorite part is when the low notes she plays crecendo at 2:20, so cool.

She would have owned this competition if the rest of her third round (this one) was as good as her first, which in my opinion was the best in the entire competition.

Her feux follets is actually taken a bit slower than Berezovsky and MeiTing, but it's still amazing.  Her Don Juan is also pretty great, she actually plays the whole thing.
