Please some competition repertoire advice before tomorow
on: May 10, 2007, 12:58:46 AM
So, I have talked with my piano teacher quite a bit about repertoire for an upcoming competition I qualified for. For the first round, I played the first movement of Prokofiev's second piano concerto. For the second round, I must play the first two movements, followed by another solo piece or movement from a different musical period. The third round consists of the full concerto, and the full solo piece, if say a movement of a Sonata is chosen for the second round. Here's my thoughts for the solo piece.
Either:
Brahms Op.116
Brahms Op.118
Schumann Novelettes
A set of Mazurkas (maybe Op.24?)
I am sortof counting out playing a classical sonata, and since the second round of the competition is in a month, I would like to avoid learning a one movement solo piece. So then, I could choose something from my current solo repertoire:
Liszt Dante Sonata
Brahms Scherzo Op.4
Haydn Sonata No.23
Clementi Sonata Op.40 No.2
I have tons to choose from, and I am probably leaning more towards a set of Mazurkas, as it would show the audience and judges that I am not afraid to tackle the big works (Prokofiev), but that I am not afraid to tackle the small works either. If anyone has any insightful comments, please post, as I must mail my repertoire selections tomorow or maybe the next day for it to arrive in time.
Thanks,
Sam
