Arts administration as a career?
on: May 16, 2007, 03:50:22 AM
Hi I'm contemplating getting training to do arts/music administration along with my piano teaching and I wanted to find out people's opinions. My main interest is in teaching, but I'm not at the point where I'm ready to have my own home studio (I live in an apartment and am not really settled -thinking of moving). Also, I'm thinking I might meet others interested in music and arts in this field and it seems I would be more isolated just teaching piano on my own.
So my dilemma is, I'm not sure if the arts admin would be mostly boring low-paying desk work (I work in a desk job now but not in the arts field) or if it would be interesting. I wanted to find out your opinions especially anyone who has done this type of work. Right now I really do need to supplement my teaching and I want something worthwhile but not that would drain my energy so that I couldn't still teach.

Sounds interesting.
But where are the jobs? I could see it in a large city, but the community orchestras seem to be volunteer -- and they couldn't pay for someone to coordinate everything. Or if they could, it's probably not a good salary.
