Books on form?
on: May 21, 2007, 08:33:16 AM
I'm interested in composing and improvising, I've got a solid foundation of music theory from playing electric bass previously and also some dedicated study of theory alone.

I'm desperately lacking when it comes to form though, could anyone recommend some good interesting books that I could study and learn all the essentials from?  The interesting aspect is important, I want to enjoy working through it, not to just be presented with a list of facts that I must internalize.

Thanks.

These books are great and a very good alternative to what I call "shopping-list" books (encyclopedia-like explanation of theoretical stuff and the intrinsic thousands of exception but no real explanation on how to put such knowledge in practice)

"The Forms of Music," by Tovey.  I don't know if it is still in print since it is probably 75 years old, but it is worth looking for!

Stein, Leon.  Structure and Style: The study and analysis of musical forms. Summy-Birchard Company.  Evanston Illinois, 1962.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach
