How do you call yourself?

In English, the question would be "what is your name".  In a number of other languages (for instance Italian "come ti chiami") the question is expressed as "how do you call yourself".

Now it struck me the other day, that if you asked me "what is your name", I would give you one answer (and insist that that is what you called me, I have a grave dislike of my name being shortened), but the honest answer to the question "how do you call yourself" would be somewhat different.

Do other people, when thinking/talking to themselves use a name other than the "official version"?

I think somewhere in there is a wider issue of language and man

and on the odd occasion that I do talk to myself, this is what I would use.

This was my question; whether any of us privately refer to ourselves as something different from what we expect the world to call us.?

I am generally okay with the way I call myself. I am not okay however, with how much my name is contorted by others, with each new attempt at pronouncing my name a variation on the contortion. Only a couple of times have I heard my name being pronounced properly. Interesting thing is when I get calls from such organizations such as police departments, fire-fighting departments, etc trying to squeeze money out of me for support. Aside from being extremely annoying they also turn my name inside out, to the point that when they ask for whether the said name is at home, I simply reply: "no he isn't," and for good measure. After all how can I provide them with someone who isn't at home.

it's the same in french! je m'appele çiçek. it means I call myself çiçek. but I don't call myself çiçek, it's my real name...

I call myself kuki (pronounced like "cookie") but it has no relation with cookie. I first call myself as kuki when I was a baby (when I had no english)

Lol.  I bet I'm shorter.  Hmm... I should really stop gambling.

I tend to just use my name *shrug* or 'Klutz' (I address various body parts when the need  arises).  =)

i meant that perhaps you should wait for him to call you that.  not sure that he would.  but, i'm thinking -unless someone else makes bad joke - you shouldn't give yourself a hard time.
