I want to play a Concerto
on: June 02, 2007, 05:42:19 PM
Hi there

I have just completed Rachmaninov`s Prelude op. 3 no. 2 and Chopin`s Etude Op. 25 no. 1 in two and a half weeks. I`m looking for a new piece(Chopin) to start with. It must be a challange, but stil playable. I don`t want to play a Nocturne or a Mazurka. Any advice?

O, and I want to start a concerto. Which one will also be a challange but not MUCH more difficult than my two works I have just completed?

you could try Mozart's Piano Concerto's. If you want to learn another chopin that is challenging and is sort of a solo concerto try Andante Spinato and Grande Polonaise Brilliante. Anyway you could get Chopin's here https://imslp.org/wiki/Andante_Spianato_et_Grande_Polonaise_Brillante_Op.22_%28Chopin%2C_Frederic%29

oh yeah, i want to learn a concerto too,my teacher has all the solo mozart piano concerto sheets but im waiting for her to give me the signal that i can learn one.

 Dear Chrstiaan:
Early Mozart's are indeed a good suggestion.
Another possibility, quite manageable and a common first choice, is Grieg's.
 Best!

the grieg concerto is much (MUCH!) harder than the chopin etude/rach prelude. and the grande polonaise is even harder! i'd stay well away from them for the time being and get more rep under your belt first. a moz concerto might be fine though if you've played some of his stuff already.

If Mozart is not your thing, you could try one of the Haydn concerti. Or possibly Beethoven 1? (though this is more difficult)

or you could try mendelssohn's concerto no 1, it is'nt terribly difficult although it will take quite a lot of practise. https://imslp.org/wiki/Piano_Concerto_No.1%2C_Op.25_%28Mendelssohn%2C_Felix%29 If you don't want to make it too long, you could just play the presto.   I could email you the recording as well, i have it.

I think the best concerto for a budding pianist who's not very advanced would probably be the Beethoven Rondo in Bflat, WoO (Forget the number :().

Besides that, why not look at a Hummel?  Quite hard, but good for your tech.
For us musicians, the music of Beethoven is the pillar of fire and cloud of mist which guided the Israelites through the desert.  (Roughly quoted, Franz Liszt.)
