The Program of my Admission Test
on: June 05, 2007, 02:07:51 PM
I'll be trying for the 4th grade this year, and the program will be:
1- A major scale, chosen by the candidate, and the same but minor (harmonic), in the extension of 4 octaves. The respective arpeggios of the perfect chord of the tonic (fundamental state and inversions), in the extension of 4 octaves. The cromatic scale starting at the same tonic, in the extension of 4 octaves.
2- A study of the following books:
CZERNY Op.299, Op.636, Op.849, a book of ed. Schott Vol.4 and 5.
HELLER Op.45, Op.46, Op.47
DUVERNOY Op.120
BERTINI Op.29
3- One piece from the book "Preludes and easy pieces", or "Book for W. Fr. Bach".
4- A sonata or complete sonatina from the following ones:
Beethoven: Sonatas Op.49
Mozart: Sonatinas from Viena
KUHLAU: Sonatinas Op.20 no.1, 2 and 3; Op.55 no.2, 3, 4, 5 and 6; Op.59 no. 1, 2 and 3.
DUSSEK: Sonatina Op.20 no.1
HAYDN: Sonata no.11 (ed. Peters).
CLEMENTI: Sonatinas Op.36 no.2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.
5- A piece at the candidate's choice.
6- One reading at first sight.

What do you guys think? Is it too difficult?
Any recommendations?
Thank you.
Goodbye for now,
OceanSoul.

pick the beethoven and be done with it. the kulau should burn.
i never heard of duvernoy. whichever exercises make you look good. look for the most melodious one.
take your time with the reading at first sight. establish, first and foremost - the slowest possible speed within reason of the tempo. in fact, just forget the tempo and go for the notes if you have to. they are counting pages. how many pages can you get through before you stop - and say 'argh.'
scan the page. eliminate unnecessary notes. get the 'gist' of the piece. mostly the melodious parts. add in a bit of bass. unless you are a good sightreader. in which case, you are not worried about the sightreading.
what are you playing for 'candidate's choice?'

Thanks for the reply, pianistimo.
I don't know anything yet. Now I'm starting with the first point. I'm doing major scales, harmonics, arpeggios and cromatic scale.
Thank you for your opinion about Beethoven. If you say I should pick that one, it's probably that one that's best for me to pick, and I'll pick it. What do you mean with "the Kuhlau should burn"?
What study do you think I should pick, also?
About the candidate's choice one, do you think I have to do a piece of the 4th grade? Or could I play an anime's piece, soundtrack's piece or something like that? I have no idea. lol
Thank you again,
OceanSoul.

No.. you should'nt do that. Pick and learn a 18th/20th centuary work that you like.

my advise:
take the pieces in the same key of the scale you had chosen, if possible
at least the sonatina end the study
this is good from technical point of view
do not take Mozart's Wiener Sonatinen, they are to tricky!!!!!
Duvernoy is very simple, Bertini would be my choise
Czerny is OK too, but choose one which equally treats left and the right hand then (sometimes to long and boring)
