Can you Recognize this?

In the Film, "The Cranes are Flying," an old Russian film, a man plays the piano and he plays something which sounds deeply Russian.

Does anyone have any idea what it might be?

(P.S. This film heavily influenced Stephen Spielberg's film making and was considered by him to be the best film in the late (insert decade in which it was made.))
For us musicians, the music of Beethoven is the pillar of fire and cloud of mist which guided the Israelites through the desert.  (Roughly quoted, Franz Liszt.)
