Censorship or Freedom?
on: June 16, 2007, 11:37:06 PM
Greetings
I of course acknowledge that censorship in the right hands at the right time is extremely benefitial to both the society in general, or as in this case, this forum. It prevents the disintegration of structure and coherence and as far as forum conduct is concerened, it helps to even out certain discrepancies. That is all good, however, do you think that such forum moderation can also bear negative consequences as well, such as stifling out the exiting part of conversation that many members need. I am sure you noticed that the "anything" room is now by far the largest room, and in addition to that, it alone contains most of the "hot" topics and I have noticed that they are becoming rather abundant nowadays. This may or may not be directly related to the whole censorship practice, but in my opinion, there is a connection. If members are refused their right of free speech, and any information here is easily eliminated, would it not make sense that more members would want to express their feelings in some other way, such as creating myriad of similar threads in the "anything" room?
Getting back to censorship, is anyone of the opinion (I am not saying I am) that exercising strict moderation will increase the "boredom" factor and less members would contribute? I do not have anything against moderation, nor am I stating my own opinions in this matter. I just want to know what other's stance on this is: whether to enforce more censorship, or allow greater freedom.

I have not seen any censorship in the anything room for a long while and have been surprised at some of the stuff that has "got through". It must be impossible for nils to read everything.
The only censorship i have seen is copyright infringements in the sheet room.

i like censorship. It helps get rid of watching something inappropriate with your parents and having that akward moment.

Personally, I never find anything written on the forum as insulting, however inappropriate that information may be. Too me it is just funny. If someone posts nude or obscene pictures on the net, it is just that: nude obscene pictures. Humour, however insulting or "black," is still humour. However, many younger people visit this forum and there is a chance that some of the information here may influence them in a negative way. On that note, if some of the stuff should be banned here, the entire da SDC cite should be censored. (Does that place even have active moderators?)
I suppose a bigger question is this: does inappropriate material have a negative impact on younger audience?
