Prokofiev Sonatas
on: June 17, 2007, 08:28:49 AM
I'm currently learning(finishing) Sonata no.2 by Prokofiev. It's one of my goals to finish all 9 of them. Which do you think I should try next (I'd guess 1 or 3)? Should I learn them in order of difficulty, or what I like or what?

I love the 3rd movement randomly, so that may not be impossible ;)

well 7 is the hardest by a long way, for the first movement, has some VERY nasty bits. i often find that learning the pieces you like best makes the task a lot less gruelling  -  so i did not do the poll but i would suggest going with the one you like the most.

I guess it's true that motivation will make it easier. The only problem is that I like all of the Prokofiev Sonatas... except maybe no.5, which I still like, but not as much as the others... I seriously doubt I have the technique to handle no.7 (I don't think I can handle no.6,8,9 at the moment either, so doing any of these will probably end in a disaster). I guess 1,3,4 will be next, since I like them and can probably handle them.

im sure you'd be ok with 7, there are only a few seriously nasty passages. have a go! if you fail, try a different one. 6 is easier. best of luck with whatever you choose.

7 is the second-hardest.  The entire last movement is a "nasty passage".

Hardest: number 6.  This is pretty unarguable and unanymous.

jesus christ...   ive learnt sonata 7 complete with my teacher as he studied it with dennis matthews. thought the last movement was easy compared to first. but hey, if its unarguable, whats the point, eh.

Make a poll and ask which is the hardest Prokofiev Sonata.  6 will have the most, 7 will have the second-most.

Aww thanks <3  I wonder why fucks doesn't get censored =/

Anyway, sorry.  Not trying to start more sh*t with you here.  Just saying that most people think 6 and 7 are the hardest, so it's probably not the best place for him/her to continue on with.  Although personally I think the 1st/2nd movements of Sonata No. 2 are trickier than the 6/7th sonatas.  Maybe not requiring as much stamina but plenty of pitfalls and oddities to overcome.

Not to enter another debate, but I agree, 8 would be the hardest, it's rather elusive and the 3rd movt looks horendous.  I've played 7 and I'm scared of 8!

Yeah, although #8 might not be as physically brutal as #6 or 7.

to tha original poster #3 is short and sweet, and since it is such a popular hit i think it would be great to focus your efforts on learning it inside out.

Mmm.... so far it's either 3 or 4 I guess.... I don't think attempting 6 or 7 at the moment is good for me(but I may learn some movements ahead *cough*no.6(2&3mvts), no.7(2mvt)*cough*)

Nobody likes no.1? I actually like it...

Play No. 4 next!!  The 2nd movement is so freaking gorgeous!  Nothing else compares.  I just finished this sonata and now am learning No. 2  ;D

This is the best recording of the 4th Sonata:

No. 1 is Romantic, not modern, and 7 is played to death.  Vladimir Viardo has been playing the 4th recently and Richter loved it to death.

I guess I'm learning no.4, the second movement made me do it, I swear. :'(
My  plan will be 2->4->1/3->5/6/7/8/9
