i lost 20 lbs in one day
on: June 17, 2007, 03:56:51 PM
yes.  today.  i rode 36 miles with no food and one bottle of water.  it was getting hot on the way back. i think i should have taken a sandwich - but every time i looked down my legs were skinnier.  finally, finally - it's taking effect - this bicycling.

what is?  losing 20 lbs in one day?  i was careful about it.  i walked up some of the hills so i wouldn't give myself a heart attack.  part of the reason i went so far today was because of a detour.

You are likely to kill youself doing that and almost all of the weight you lost is water.

Bananas are best for cycling.

how do you know?  what if it was fat melting?  men have no idea how much women have to work to lose just one idiotic pound.  i shall celebrate and drink another glass of lemonade ice tea.  replenishing those electrolites.  and, of course - eating a banana for potassium.

anyways - if i ride like this tommorrow - i'll be marathoning soon.

Sounds like it was your brain melting.

When will you women learn that you don't have to kill yourself to look good and many look great carrying a few extra pounds.

Cycling is an excellent way of losing weight, but you will hit the "bonk" if you are not careful.

i don't think it is possible to lose 20 pounds in one day, obviously the majority of the weight you lost was water but even still i don't think that you were carrying around 20 pounds of just water

And really.... 36 miles is not near enough to lose 20 lbs.  Maybe if you rode 36 miles every day for a month with only a bottle of water.... then you'd lose the 20 lbs.
When you earnestly believe you can compensate for a lack of skill by doubling your efforts, there's no end to what you can't do.

On a big summer tour over 3 weeks I lose on average 10-14 ounces (300-400 g) fat per day. (I use to cycle more than 60-70 miles per day in flat areas and less when I go into the mountains.) Everything else is water loss. Dehydration. Dangerous, yes :o. Drink, drink, drink.

i'm tougher than you.  what can i say.  i only took one bottle of water.  i'm like my cat.  she can do without water for a day.  and, i got used to desert heat in california.  i think i'm superworman.   and yes.  i feel fine.  not dangerous at all.  (bonk)>  passes out.

it's 90 degrees right now - but, when i came home it was still fairly early morning.  that's why it wasn't so hard.  it wasn't hot and there was plenty of shade under the trees.

one secret i've found.  don't drink the water.  pour it over yourself.  your body heat goes way down.  it's a sort of airconditioned ride for 10 miles afterwards.

Listen to Wolfi, drink, drink, drink.

If you run out of water, head for the nearest pub as Stella Artois is just as good ;D

36 miles on a bike will not lose 20lbs.

Try dragging a 400lb sled to the South Pole. Then you might lose 20lbs for 36 miles.

don't worry.  i just gained 20 lbs in a day.  just had a mile high mud pie.   well, half of the mile.  never drink and eat.

i understand about those dogsled racers.  susan butcher being my all-time favorite - because guys won so much that they were totally in shock the first time she won.  the thing is - the higher and higher checkpoints are frigidly mannish.  you have to get people to literally take your hands off the dogsled.  carry you inside sideways.  i liked the little booties she used to sew or get for her dogs.  she always treated them sooo good.  that's why they worked so hard for her.

I am not referring to dog sledding, but man hauling.

That is the best way to burn calories.

7 to 8,000 per day if you put your back into it.

Next week i am gonna attempt the Tour de France route from London to Canterbury. About 125 miles, which i hope to do in 10 hours. Just gotta work out the best pubs to visit.

london to canterbury is 125 miles?  or is that round trip?  and how does the tour de france route get into this.  are there several routes?  i gather the one you are picking has a lot of hills.

well, remember -don't drink too much water.  did you know people have died from drinking too much water at one time?

It is a roundish route.

The Tour passes through my home town this year.

Even the Vicar at my mums church is delaying the morning service so he can see it.

I bet you are not impressed with that.

wait a minute. with all due respect - pianowolfi has to drink too much water.  i say - one water bottle and then let's see who gets the farthest.  i will win.

That would be pretty pointless, but not if you want to end up in hospital.

I think i could probably beat you over 10 miles on the flat.

you have no idea how competitive i am.  your tires would be flat before you started.  pianowolfi's water would be spiked with cherry juice.

seriously.  i don't like to lose.  i'm not saying i can't lose.  i just don't like to.  and, there is an element of mystery to someone being behind and then passing at the 5 mile mark.  i kept doing this with a cycling couple.  they passed me on the hills - i passed them on the flat.  3x.

it's really no challenge.  with thal - you have to get him at the beginning.  pianowolfi- would be a sneaky ending.  you know - off to the restroom - and i'd pass him and win.

Lemonade AND iced tea are diuretics; definitely not a good thing to drink, because as it was said earlier, almost all of the weight lossed that way is from dyhydration; you need water.

Bicycling one mile at around 15/mph burns app. 30 calories. So biking around 36 miles would burn about 1080 calories. You would have to burn 3500 calories to lose one pound. So you did not lose 20 lbs. You did lose quite a bit of water. Be very careful, especially in this very hot weather.

Hey Thal,

The tours going through Tenterden, and down A28 to Ashord right?  You'll come close by my gaff  ;D

ok.  i'm a heretic.  i re-read my messages - and you are all quite right.  i did not lose 20 lbs in one day. and, yes...it was one of those 'i'm bored.  there's no new threads here.'  but, seriously - i did feel MUCH lighter when i came home.  if only i would have stayed home and not gone out to eat afterwards.  sharon_f - did you have to be so exact about how much it will take to only burn 1 pound.  this is fairly depressing if one thinks about it too much.  i shall just continue to ride and not count exact figures.

ok.  so, i will buy 2 water bottles and start drinking two bottles per ride.

ps i did sightread mozart symphony #40 to page 10 yesterday - so my piano hands can't be that weak.

bob - did you say a BABY?  oh, thanks!  (ponders bob's methodology of thought).
