Pieces with simple left hand
on: June 22, 2007, 10:26:59 AM
Hi everyone

I have an injury on my left hand which makes it hard for me to grab full chords.
I can do octaves but my forefinger and middle finger are somewhat paralyzed.

Im looking for pieces where the left hand is pretty simple, but I have a fully working right hand.

Can you help me?

Regards Jenkrid

Well, if it is not an irreversible handicap, I would suggest you to just let it heal and hold back from working piano until then, otherwise you could deteriorate the situation.

If you look in the jazz genre I am sure you will find some stuff to suit you as the melody is mainly RH and they don't don't tend to have an invertable counterpoint.

There are pieces wich are written for the right hand ONLY. They are few and often difficult. I cannot remember any of them right now exept for a very difficult piece by Alkan(Opus.76), but I will try to find others.

This is stretching it a bit, only because the piece I am suggesting is an accompaniment, but it is very beautiful by itself. The Claude Bolling suite for flute and piano (No. 1) has a beautiful second movement that as I can recall, has a very simple left hand. It's really great and something I really enjoyed playing without a flautist.

The left hand in certain Mozart sonatas aren't that difficult.

Do you have problems playing scales and arepeggios with your left hand, or only large chords?

I have problems playing  arpeggios and scales with my left hand, yes. Mephisto: I will look into the mozart sonatas, and Ryan2189: the Claude Bolling piece is very beautiful and I will try and learn it :)

Thanks for the replies every one

Try the Chopin berceuse op.57. The opening motif in the left hand (which is incredibly easy) repeats virtually unchanged throughout. The right hand gets a serious workout with thirds, scales, arpeggios, etc. As long as your right is up to it then your left certainly will be.
