Ignore feature in chat
on: June 30, 2007, 05:54:02 PM
I would just like to ask for the removal of this (extremely buggy) feature from the chat room, for a few reasons.

Firstly, because when many people are ignoring others it makes communication absolutely nonsensical and bizarre (or moreso).

Secondly, because of the bugs in the ignore feature, you can completely screw up another person's chat by ignoring them, causing them to be unable to type whenever the member who is ignoring you is in there. I've found a way around it (different browser) but it's extremely (and I think, understandably) aggravating.

Thank you for your time.

I would also like to express my wish for the removal of this stupid and pointless feature. I personally see it as a rude gesture to someone. Seeing "You have been ignored by user ____" is particularly annoying, especially because it is a sort of "slap in the face", and this forum is supposed to be a nice, inviting place. I see the ignore button as something that goes against that. So, nils, please remove this feature from the chat room. It has caused problems with my browser also in the past, along with some other bugs in the chat system.

I agree. Whenever i entered the chat room while a user ignoring me is present i got the message "___ is ignoring you messages" and i click ok or the exit button and the message just keeps flashing and it makes me unable to type! also, as mozartian stated previously, i have witnessed people using very strange methods of communication. in the midst of conversations, people will be spewing out messages that make absolutely no sense to you. and last off its just plain annoying having people ignoring you in the first place.

EDIT: i also commonly witness the ignore button being used as a threat against other members.

This is a real annoyance.... I've had it happen to me several times... some intentional, some not.  Regardless, it's frustrating.  It really screws up both the main convo, as well as pm's going on.

Also, I've fond that sometimes if whoever's ignoring me is in the chat, I can't even log in... again, extremely frustrating.

I second the motion!

Absolutely agree.

There is no need to "ignore" anyone, if someone has a problem with someone, its just to talk with the person and ask if he\she could behave differently.

Ok, today it just got out of hand. Many members have been inconvenienced by the ignore button today. Can a moderator please have some input and/or take some action?

Greetings

I completely agree with you saying that the icon is absurd in meaning and is vulgar at worst. However, you can use it to your advantage. Record, or at least memorize the names that ignore you, and try to establish a list of the potential members who often ignore you. If the feature wasn't there, then you would still not know who is really ignoring you. Not having access to the ignore button will not make the other members like you. They will still ignore you only now it will not show up on the screen. Do you really want to be around members whose hatred you do not see, but know is there?

I have noticed that people abuse the ignore feature a lot in the chat (one person is extreamly popular for using it but I will not mention their name... ;))

I think the ignore feature should be removed...if you want to ignore someone...don't talk to them!

At the very least, nils or henrik should try a different method of blocking people that does not affect others...

I completely agree. Communication breaks down when one person ignores another, because then people have to start quoting the ignored person in order for him or her to contribute to the conversation. It's absolutely pointless.

The screwup of another person's chat should not be allowed at all, either.

I support the motion to remove the Ignore feature.

Unless i am very much mistaken, it appears that the initiator of this thread has been using the function that he/she wishes to be removed.

Perhaps there is a use for it after all.

I have used it before, when certain extremely belligerent members won't stop acting like stalkers. It's something I definitely try to avoid, though.

Were you not using it today, 2 days after you asked for said function to be removed?

I do not understand the concept of stalking in a chatroom.

Perhaps someone would be so kind as to explain.

Yes i do remember, but don't you think it is hypocritical to ask for a function to be removed that you have used yourself?

That's what happens if you post a picture of Liv Tyler while giving the impression that it is a picture of yourself.

There are crazy peoples on the internets.

How would you know if this happened, or I imaged it to have happened, about 2 years ago?

I even remember telling her that I thought the Liv Tyler picture was some LARP picture of her because of the context it was posted in.

Yes, I am naive like that.

Anyway, I just wanted to make a joke.

To me, there is no difference.

If you are at a party and there is someone there you don't like or you don't want to talk to, you ignore them.

Possibly 30 people use chat, we are not all going to get on, so to me it is a useful feature.
