Suggestions for not-too-hard Brahms?
on: July 13, 2007, 06:38:06 AM
Hi everyone,

I figure that since I haven't played any Brahms (except the g minor rhapsody, and that was a while ago), I would like to play some more of his music. Can you guys suggest some pieces that Brahms that aren't too challenging? Most of Brahms' music seems very difficult to approach so some suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks.

I really like his Ballade no. 2 op.10. Is it really hard?

It depends on your current level. If you're still playing Clementi sonatinas, then yes, it's hard.
Asked if he had ever conducted any Stockhausen,Sir Thomas Beecham replied, "No, but I once trod in some."

not too hard Brahms doesn't exist!
Possibly the Ballades, the 1st seems manageable although I don't know you're level.  A lot of people start with the bmin rhapsody, but if you've already done the gmin....
Maybe the simplified version of the Waltzes.  There's a gavotte and 2 sarabandes that don't look too challenging technically, but they're hardly ever played so I don't know the musical worth.
Never look at the trombones. You'll only encourage them.

If you have played the g minor rhapsody, then you could handle the scherzo op.4 in e-flat minor.

what's your level/grade? that would be the easiest way to find out what is suitable for you.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

I'm not sure of my level, but I tried for Panel for the CM in California (after passing level 10) and I played Chopin ballade no.1, Tempest sonata (mov. 1), Bach prelude and fugue no.17, and the third Argentinian dance by Ginastera.

I've already started the Ballade no.2; I really like it. :)
