Words that aren't the opposite of anything
on: July 17, 2007, 02:49:22 AM
Okay, ever notice all those words that are supposedly the opposite of something but the 'original' never shows up?

Inept......."Oh yes, he's very socially ept"
Discombobulated......"I'm feeling very combobulated today."
Dissheveled....."You look wonderful! Very sheveled."

Add more please

Cleave has two meanings which are antonyms of each other.

Off-topic, nonetheless.

Nevertheless?  I'm going to do it theless.
For us musicians, the music of Beethoven is the pillar of fire and cloud of mist which guided the Israelites through the desert.  (Roughly quoted, Franz Liszt.)

Male & female

Both characteristics of humans, so very similar and clearly not opposites.

Black & white

Both 'colours' so very similar concepts.

Black & white

Both 'colours' so very similar concepts.

Similar concepts, but within the frame "colors", the opposites.

Black - absence of any frequency of visible light, White - maximum of all frequencies of visible light.

Some words seem to be opposites, but are the same.

INflammable -- same as flammable (from the English enflame -- or to burst INto flames)
IRregardless -- superfluous redundancy
INland -- IN is not a negative here

That one reminds me of another subject - that of composer comparatives. Someone who presumably didn't think much of those oft-used ones pronounced as "Beethoveenian" and "Wagneerian" (after all, who are "Beethoveen" and "Wagneer"?) once proposed a few better ones, commencing with "Coplandish". In another thread in this section, you can now amuse yourselves by thinking up some good ones...

Discombobulated..."I'm feeling very combobulated today."

I always use the word "Discombobulated"! I was one of the few to use that word here on PianoStreet. It is a shame that you are not asking for words that are the opposite of each other...I could answer that very easily. I would answer "oxymoron".

Sorry this post is useless and pointless!
