dead at 55. shot himself in the head a few days ago -. but what successes in his life, too! he played a major role in bernstein's candide and beverly sills hired him at the met.
this is why certain musicians need a patron even today. so they can keep doing what they love and not worry about money.

This man was fabulously succsessful in a difficult field, and wealthy. Maybe his voice was shot and obviously he had psychological problems.
BUT
He could teach or direct, or sit on his duff and drink and do nothing by cashing in his pricey Connecticutt real estate, and still have a comfortable lifestyle and afford the therapy to get through his problems.
But no; he shot himself, leaving two children to wonder why. I can't I respect him, OR feel sorry for him, the latter being the reaction from the world that he was probably looking for.
Perhaps there is/was a skeleton in his closet...

i thought that the article mentioned bankruptcy - due to lack of confidence in his voice and drinking too much. but, perhaps drinking is bad for the voice. and, i agree that people should attempt not to 'give up' - even if they don't have children. depression is a non- rational thing sometimes. i hope that his successes will be remembered.
