These two seem to vary by about £50.  Is there much to chose between them otherwise?

Yes. The main differences are
1) The built in microphones in Edirol look like omni type and H4 are cardioids.
2) The Edirol has so called mic power for 1/8" input for external mics, while H4 has a true 48V phantom power and can accept professional XLR input mics.

Best. Period.

I have exactly this one  :D

It works very good for me. I have recorded a lot of recitals with this and am very happy with it  :)
Just check my Brahms intermezzo in the audition room (it's recorded with the edirol)  :D

For sure, Marik could advise you better because, reading from his posts, he knows really alot about it and has far more experience than me with these things, but I am already quite content with this  :)
