When I was in second grade, my friend Andy played the piano for me.  I immediately became obsessed and begged my parents for lessons.  My mother sternly said "no" since she wanted me to play sports instead.  After two years of begging, I was finally allowed to start lessons.

With me, it was the other way around.

I wanted to play sports, but i had to go to piano lessons.

My first instrument is flute, which I started playing mainly through a desire to irritate my school music teacher at the time... we had to learn recorder at school and I hated it - I was fairly precocious about the subjects I was interested in and I knew even then that a group of 30 kids playing the recorder badly and out of tune was an abomination - but as I was interested, the teacher tried to make me learn double bass (!) as, even though I had no interest in playing a string instrument, let alone bass, I was the tallest kid in the class... anyway, I pestered her till she let me start flute lessons and never looked back!

My grandmother used to play piano, so it was sitting there when I was younger. She would teach me and I got really good, so she sent me to the church music minister(ess). It only got better after that.
In elementary school, my school music teacher taught us all sorts of instruments (recorder, xylophone, gong [I was the only one who got to play it. I was REALLY happy] and other stuff)
In middle school, I didn't like band, so I joined Orchestra and took up the violin.
In 7th grade, I went to a private school (which was too cheap for an orchestra) so I took up drums.

And now in High School... I'm down to piano and voice. *tear*

my most motivation to play came from myself when i was in highschool and could already sightread somewhat and was asked to accompany a swing choir.  i had so much fun that i began to see music in a much different light.  not just practice, practice - but actually the fun of performing.  also, it motivated me to sightread more and more music.  now, i print out some music for no reason at all except to read through it.  it's like reading a book and finding out something new that you didn't know.  music is a language and can open up many doors for you.

i suppose, honestly, i could attribute it to the first lessons that my mom paid a neighbor piano teacher for - and it grew from there.
