Strained Muscle in Hand?
on: August 04, 2007, 09:04:36 PM
Has anyone ever strained their/hands arms playing big cords/octaves? I did this in my right hand the other day while playing chopin and I'm now unable to play any piano
I have a friend who did this in both hands and it took weeks for everything to heal. Has this ever happened to anyone?
Is there anything I can do to make my hand heal faster?

You probably just tore some connective tissue.
This isn't a very big issue unless you habitually use a poor technique and you should avoid doing anything that causes pain until it heals. When it does, you'll probably be able to stretch your hand more than you did before and you won't strain it as easily.
So until it heals, get the proper amount of sleep (your body releases growth hormones to heal during deep sleep) and nutrition.
But my advice is only if you this is a one time occurence. If you were practicing in a manner that continually causes strain, you might as well quit playing the piano and play Guitar Hero. And about your friend, he obviously ignored the sensations from his body that told him to stop doing what was causing pain. And weeks to heal? He probably just kept on ignoring the pain and he didn't let it heal.

I havn't strained any muscles yet, but if I keep playing Erlkonig by Schubert I might.
Those who havn't heard/played/seen it, think triplet chords continuously in the right hand, very fast.
Ouch.

I am going through that now... pain in hand and all the way up through shoulder. I first noticed pain on Moonlight Sonata and then with forearm action and then on anything with hand extension. I have read the previous comments on pain and down 6 ALeve gels a day while I wait for improvement in pain. If all else fails, after wax hand bath, I guess I will have to resort to steroid injecton.
I think I was playing too often for long periods of time.
