how sensitive r we?
on: August 08, 2007, 12:16:23 PM

Do you get that sometimes??? being called a little more  "sensitive" than usual?

I don't know why some of my "non- musicians" friedns think that pianists or classical musicians can be geeky .. and a little emotional when playing or listening to a classical piece.. It's really annoying when someone call u a freak just because u cry everytime u listen to/ play  Ballade No 4 ( F Chopin) .

have you ever been very emotional toward a piece?

have you ever been called a geek cuz u feel so connected to Chopin,Mozart,Rach instead of Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson??

typically i cry when i'm not involved in playing the piece.  that way, i can direct my full attention to listening and enjoyment.  i don't know why -but i rarely cause myself to cry when playing it myself ? hmm.  i'm not a terrible pianist, mind you.  but, my goal is to cause others to hear the sensitive parts of the music and for them to have emotional or thought-provoking action - so if i break down and cry when I am playing - it might cause them to think there is something inherently 'soft' about me.  you know - not able to 'cut it.'  so - i don't cry when i am playing - lest it be thought that the technical aspects are causing me to cry.

...I only recall crying (that is, uncontrollable hics and tears) twice; one was in the audience of a performance of Liszt Funerailles, and the other was while playing Schumann Symphonic Etudes. I figured I was tired both times - 4 hour sleep for a few days in a row - so when I get carried away...

...can't think of anything more derogatory and insulting than anyone saying I'm connected to Britney Spears' 'music' :D

well yes I know.. u can't actually perform well while crying ,, as I said before ,,, it only happens to me with Ballade 4 ... I have never experienced such emotions when playing a piece like this one .

You're a freak because you are a freak. "Normal" people don't exhibit the type of behavior you do. I'd probably guess that you spend hours of your day practicing instead of "chilling" with friends. You probably haven't given up most of your individuality so you probably get into debates and arguments a lot. You don't hide your emotions.

You are in a group represented by the smaller portion of the population. Therefore, you are a freak.

Bask in it. Revel it. Never feel ashamed of it.

PS people don't like when you cry, specially for no reason ;), because it makes them want to cry themselves. It makes them uncomfortable and the easiest way to break your state, thus getting back their normal grounding, is to insult you. Because obviously there is no reason for consolation. :P

I am a complete freak when it comes to this. More than I used to be earlier in my life, it seems to get stronger by-and-by. I am not ashamed of it. It is a way to percieve the beauty in the world, in music/art as well as in nature. People just have to cope with it. When somebody plays wonderfully it's anyway a good compliment if you cry. Recently I almost fainted at a dinner because a fellow pianist told me how he had successively to stop all playing because of a severe and "irreparable" (I doubt if it's actually irreparable hence the quotes) tendonitis. He would describe it in all terrible details. And after it I was supposed to perform :o I was glad I was sitting. Cold sweat though it was like 90° F and I got VERY dizzy. I told people around me what happened and they seem not to understand ANYTHING. As if I spoke in a foreign language. Who are the real freaks? People who are sensitive or people who are not enough sensitive? I mean, humans are more human if they ARE sensitive.

my 2nd cousin just called me a geek yesterday when I told him I stay up late to read/play the piano. crazy all the time, boring definatly, lazy yeah by my mom and grandma, ani-social  this one happens often.

When I'm in just a really bad mood only the piano can calm me down and if anyone interrupts i'll flare up and just be in a mood for the rest of the day lol.

I am somewhat strictly against stereotypes. I don't think any of it applies me. I may be a hypocrite and use it on myself sometimes but you can barely catch me like that. It's only once in awhile.

Each and every one of my friends have different opinions about me, and my love of piano. I remember I had to take piano class at school and it was not an option. My class didn't have a clue about piano while I knew too many things. While they attempted to learn the notes and do exercises in computer (there was a program downloaded in the computer to teach kids about piano), they would find me, just sitting there, listening to classical music instead.

They would often call me a cheater, a loser, and many other insulting names. Despite these insults, I pay no attention to this because I believe I am beyond that. I am extraordinary with lots of confidence which it is quite weird because I have a low self-esteem.

While playing the piano, the dynamics are very significant to me. So I do play with lots of emotion. My siblings often call me crazy for showing TOO much emotions. I don't see myself to be showing a lot but only when it's necessary.
