Godowksy's transcription
on: August 17, 2007, 02:06:50 AM
I wonder if anyone would have L. Godowsky's piano transcription on Bach's sonata's for solo violin. Just listened to the piano version on Naxos, they are brilliant!!

Hope that someone would have the piano version for the Sonata no3 in A minor

thanks  ~~  ;)

Quality transcription.

Far better than the original.

I would be interested in the other Godowsky transcriptions in this series if possible?

Absolutely not "better than the original" (notwithstanding that great Bach supporter K S Sorabji's contention to that end) but utterly wonderful transcriptions for all that; I already have paper copies of them so didn't need what you have posted, but I do very much appreciate your posting them for others' benefit (Godowsky is still in copyright, actually, but he does go out of it at the end of next year, so you never heard me mention any such thing, did you?!...)

Indeed you are correct, but i used the "American Rules" on this occasion. Copyright by Carl Fisher 1924.

Out of the myriad of Bach transcriptions, Godowsky is my favourite, followed by Friedman, Saint Saens and Stradal. Also, Sorabji's transcription of the Chromatic Fantasy is one if his works that really caught my attention.

thanks for the score :)

listening someone to play the transc seems to be a better idea than reading the score on my own, they are so complicated @_@.... though written beautifully

Is there anyone who also write on the transcription on Bach's solo violin sonatas?

Yes, loads, but usually only parts of them.

Fryer, Desjoyeaux, Masuko, Raff, Kistler, Mustonen, Saint-Saens, Fiorentino, Friedman and probably a whole lot more.

Bach was very popular with transcribers.
