Gospel songs
on: August 17, 2007, 11:51:00 AM
I have to play on a black wedding next week. They want me to play 1 piece, together with a black girl who will sing. Now we are looking for suitable gospel songs. Any suggestions?

how about her singing in french to a song of ravel?

ok.  i got a little sidetracked.  ravel and gershwin were not that far apart.  but, we're talking just regular gospel.  like modern gospel?

or art tatum's version of 'the man i love?'

i got a little sidetracked - but can't help putting godowsky passacaglia here, too - in case you need something to while away time while people are sitting down.

here's a song called 'way back into love'

i happen to love cole porter.  you might try on here - searching 'requests.'

hmm. can't seem to find any.  but, here's a humorous one 'grow old with you'

you might have to write in or ad lib a bit more - to spark it up.

why do you say "black" so many times?

You should take some fried chicken, watermelon and kool-aid spiked with malt liquer and if anyone asks why you chose these foods make sure to say "I know you people like this food".  You'll be the life of the party.

I would recommend "His Eye Is On the Sparrow" (1905), which was made famous by Ethel Waters. Its music is by Charles H. Gabriel (American 1856-1932).

Texts and MIDI transcriptions of "His Eye Is on the Sparrow" and 21 other Gabriel songs are at:

Agree with "His eye is on the sparrow," and also suggest "My God is so high."  If this is for a church wedding, it should be a sacred text, not pop songs, comic songs or jazz standards as have been suggested.  The pop/jazz love songs would be nice at the reception.

"Franz" used the word "black" twice, and appropriately.

I believe someone here has problems with racial attitude, and it is not the person who started the thread.
