Is there "Entrance Ettiquette"???
on: March 29, 2004, 01:12:11 PM
I have what may be a silly question, but was truly wondering. If one is walking on stage for a performance towards the piano (facing the bench and keys), is there a rule that stipulates which side you should enter from?
I guess I have always used the right, well...maybe the left if I'm nervous (farthest from the audience) haha. I'm not really sure. I guess I never gave it much thought until someone brought it to my attention. Also, what about exiting? Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

My mommy bought me a Steinway Model B grand. When I approach it, I can't help but smile. I realize that this, in NO way helps you. I just thought I'd say it anyway.

The right looks better -- you're all out in front. If you're on the left, it looks like you hiding -- kind of implies you don't want to share with the audience? The right makes you look more confident I think.

Heh, yeah, people judge you on the way you walk to the piano before you play. My teacher commented on the way I walked to the piano one performance. She said that it looked like I was heading off to be executed. Well, in a sense, that was true, but that's a different story
.
One should look confident yet poised prior to playing. Walk with your back straight and don't look down, etc. I guess entering from the right is better, reasons mentioned in above posts. Lol, I saw someone once climb over the bench, entering neither from left or right
.
Also, if they clap as you're walking to the stage, take a bow as an acknoledgement and thanks for their recognition. Perhaps I speak (or type) of what you aready know, my appologies.
Usually, when I have to perform at a venue known for its horrible piano, I can't help to have a look of disgust or contempt. Meh...

I suppose the impression you make could depend on where you enter the stage too. Most people I've seen come in from the left side (when viewed from the audience).
I found it helpful too to put my left hand on the piano and fold the right under while bowing. Some people look awkward when they let their arms dangle.

Thanks guys....that makes sense. I guess I have always seen most pianists enter on the side closest to the audience. It would depict a more confident beginning.
Thanks for your help!
