Carved legs and music rack=an extra $30,000?
on: August 19, 2007, 08:02:56 PM
I found a Steinway B that has the best sound ever.

But it costs $94,000.  Why?  Because the legs are carved, and the music rack is carved.  Just a little, not too much.  Nothing fancy, trust me.  Other than that, it's just a regular black piano.

My question:  What on Earth makes this piano worth another $30,000?

just like a house with a view.  the view is not included in the sale price - but added on later when everything is getting wrapped up.  a rip-off if you ask me.  since, the sale price should include these 'additional' charges which have nothing to do with the piano or the house - or add any land to your lot size or anything but aesthetics to the piano.

estate sales are the way to go, thalberg.  barely played pianos - that just sit in expensive homes.

although, if you are figuring to make it a business expense -can you write it off somehow? i think it's a 'section179 election' - a business expense under $100,000.

you can also deduct education expenses related to your work.  hopefully, that's a separate limit.

personally, i'd just buy a cheaper piano.  unless it will somehow help you to have this particular piano.  try going to some estate sales.

For an extra $30K, you can buy the legs and rack and buy yourself a $29K new car.

Legs and racks can be purchased alone and perhaps even fancier than what you described and you can still buy a new car worth $29K.

You can get a regular Steinway refinished and art-cased in Poland...for a lot less than $30k...

Let's talk about those Polish rebuilds.  I have never played one so I should not opine first (not even what I have heard, which I am happy to share).  Have you?
Money does not make happiness, but it can buy you a piano.  :)

When I saw the title, I though you meant "ripped legs", worrying that youwouldn't be able to play with a music rack because of your immense thighs.

Cheers!
For us musicians, the music of Beethoven is the pillar of fire and cloud of mist which guided the Israelites through the desert.  (Roughly quoted, Franz Liszt.)

Read what I write.

I didn't say rebuilt, I said refinished, and made into an artcase.
