Suggestion for a Schubert/Liszt program?
on: August 23, 2007, 12:17:04 PM
Hi all :)

I will be giving a recital at the end of the year, and I need to work out...

Well, most of my program has been worked out. In the first half, I will most likely be performing Liszt's Trois Etudes de Concert (Il Lamento, La Leggierezza, and Un Sospiro). It should take about 20 minutes. For the other 10 minutes, I would like to put a program consisting of Liszt's transcriptions of Schubert's songs.

Problem is, I'm not sure about how one actually programs those. I'm tempted to do Gretchen am Spinnrade followed by Auf dem Wasser zu Singen. Do you think this is acceptable?

Moreover, if I don't play the Trois Etudes de Concert, I will probably put in Liszt Funerailles, which is 11 minutes. Is 15 minutes or so of Schubert/Liszt song transcriptions a good idea? If so, which ones would you pick, and why?

Many thanks in advance!

Gretchen is very nice, but there are others which are heard less. His transcription of 'The Trout' is excellent and sounds quite flashy, too. For a slow one to contrast it you could maybe do 'Staendchen' ('serenade'). The rachmaninov recording of this is unbelieveable. Time-wise, these 3 would round up to about 11-12 minutes.

15 minutes of Schubert/Liszt is not long enough.

hmmm...my teacher thinks even Auf dem Wasser zu Singen is a 'tacky' piece :-\ hate to think what she thinks of The Trout, let alone Standchen! :-X

That said, the concert is aimed mainly to attract people who don't normally attend such concerts to go...so...hmmm what's a suitable length for such Schubert/Liszt program, you think? And what would you put in it?

Tacky is a description that could be used, but this music surely is suitable to non regular concert goers. If you mix the master pianist with the master melodist, you have winning combination.

I would suggest:

1. Ave Maira
2. Stanchen
3. Auf dem Wasser Zu Singen
4. Whohin
5. Der Muller Un der Bach

personally i would only pick one liszt/schubert transcription and play everything you said:

three concert etudes
funeralles
4th ballade
liszt/schubert transcription

encore:  another transcription

hmmmm which Standchen? The one that is von Shakespeare, or THAT other one?
...if you have the cd, now you can probably guess that I've been listening to Kissin's first(?) DG release.

Thank you for programming the 3 etudes de concert,

...you're welcome ???
The Soiree I shall check ^^ thanks!

...there will be two halves in this recital, 30 minutes each approx. In the second half there's a soprano doing operatic stuff (I think), then it's followed by Chopin Nocturnes op. 27 or op. 55 (~ 10 minutes) then finish with Chopin Ballade no. 1 (although no. 4 would be very nice!) So basically in the first half it'll be (well...) all Liszt.

...but I can still change it, and I quite like your idea, pianistimo!
