I'm a big Perahia fan, but I didn't like this that much.

On their page about attack dogs, the German wikipedia informs about this nice little dog:

Auch der Yorkshire hatte eine Vergangenheit als Kampfhund gegen Ratten

Also the Yorkshire had a history as attack dog against rats.

i have to agree with mikeyg.  i'm also a huge perahia fan - but in this, he makes the devil look clean.  there is minimal pedalling - precise worry over correct notes (as though it is mozart) and no elements of that mysterious faust which goes with liszt, chopin, and rach.  a bringing out of the tri-tones would be more along the lines of this rach - instead of the harmonies.

but, you know what!  i could never play one or two measures like perahia.  i think he is my dream.  i don't want to play that much rach anyways.  but, if one is to listen to rachmaninov -one should hear rachmaninov himself.  i think he was sure of his intended 'feel' for each piece.  i think perahia is unaware of the sinisterism that he is attempting.  he is too loveably mozartian to make one fearful in their seats.  (although i liked that sinister 'hands going apart' part).

a happy medium would be byron janis. he's a completely romantic pianist - but does not mush everything either.  you can listen to him here:

Hmmm. I think I find myself agreeing totally with pianistimo... :o  I think Perahia plays everything beautifully, but his Rach is definitely slightly missing something for me. Especially if you listen to Rach's own recordings - there is a certain sharpness to his playing, which Perahia seems to blunt a bit.
