I loved this interview.  Funny--she doesn't like Lang Lang.

i like this, too! that maturity that brings honest reflection and actually telling people that she wants to do other things besides solo recordings.  i get the sense she is 'in the moment' with performing - and prefers that people sit and listen.  not that she is recording for posterities sake all the time.  it's a very high pressure to be under.

why not just sit and listen and enjoy?  that's what music used to be about.  not perfection of notes (even though she seems highly perfectionistic in all areas) - but emotion and love.  moving an audience.  getting to know them and them you.  *these are my own impressions.

my favorite concerts have always been live and always included a symphony or vocalist.  it just breaks up the robotic - one piece after the other - type of performance.  to have a breather between things.  to really take in the aura of the music.  to hear a blended version of everyone's ideas (the conductor, the soloist, the symphony, the vocalists) of what the music means to them.  when you find someone that you can identify with - then, that's really even more amazing.  as she found her friend anderszwski (sp?).

i feel that music is meant to be shared.  on stage and off.

Wow, that's a cool interview! thalberg, thank you so much for letting us know of it. She seems to be a very funny person  :D And a wise person at the same time. She knows what is important in life. People always run after things they cannot get, and if they get them finally, they don't enjoy them. She is not one of these. She does what she wants and that is what is important. A great example for all of us. At least a great example for me.  :)

I love individualistm when it's a natural outgrowth of true artistic ability and accomplishment and not affected for it's own sake.  Thanks for sharing that interview.

I'm not sure whether i like this kind of personal sellout; i wouldn't do it, and if s.o. does that in public you can never be sure if it's honest and real. Even if this is, i don't like it.

I'm referring to some very personal statements she made. I don't like people doing that in public, that's all.

As a musician you make very personal statements all the time. So what?

No, people with no brains make personal statements to the public. People with dignity keep them intact. Martha Argerich is an incredibly courageous person in the ragard that she is willing to disclose these certain facts; yet you cannot ever compare Argerich to an idiot walking by the street looking for attention. There is a quote "A wise man says something because he has something to say. A fool says something because he has to say something."

Sorry if I was a bit harsh. I meant to say that most people who are willing to disclose private information about them tend to be more likely to not take things seriously. It is unwise to disclose that information as it potentially could be used against you. I am not sure if intelligence plays a role here.

she seems to stand by what she is saying and who's to say it's a sell-out.  do we know what she intended from her career?  i think it's personal.  to say that everyone should do the exact same things with their career makes it appear that unless you do a prescribed thing with your career - you're not cutting it.  frankly, i think insecurity is constantly comparing yourself with others.  great security is to constantly compare yourself with your own goals and ideas and not give a whole lot of thought as to whether you are meeting everyone else's ideas for you.  if she's happy - she's happy.

Just as a point interest, had the opportunity of meeting her about 6 years ago. she came with Dutoit to the steinway dealership her in phila., where i was teaching at the time. she came to pick out which concert grand she would be using. she sat down and played spinning song---mendelsohn--while dutoit leaned over the piano looking at her all starry eyed. i think the interview was extremely interesting and informative, but it left me with a remote feeling of hopelessness somewhere in my chest ---some feeling like being a little "choked'---sadness---trying to shake it--- :(

Yes, I agree.  She seems lonely and thinking about death and her age.  So precious though how she bought a house next to her best friend.   :)

I am always suprisesd when i see people who are so successful and don't seem particularly happy. here, i go around thinking "if i were as successful as so and so, i would be happier." there's a lot more to happiness than a sucessful career. so many more factors in life that are involved. :-\
