My first youtube video! A bit rough and ready, but you get the general idea...

All comments welcome (especially nice ones!)

this is a cool piece of music.  i was wondering if there are actually that many staccatos to the ends of all the phrases, though?  it seems that there might be some different endings to various places (aside from the middle - which was a great contrast, btw).

perhaps i would seek contrast with more dynamic changes - if not the endings - but great playing anyways!  poulenc was a neat composer.

have to get the music out.  maybe at the repeats bringing out other lines than the top line?

8-27-07  - can't find the music - so i went to listen and found this site.  not comparing your styles per se - but just the few places that the endings could be less the same (because i like your playing):

three movement perpetuals are kind of appealing to me - but i can only find the impromptus - so might have to work on them first.

have you heard his novelette on a theme of manuel de falla.  you can listen to it at the above site.  it's cool, too.  very beautiful night music.

Glad you liked it! You should definitely investigate some of Poulenc's piano music. Some is more interesting than others, but there are some real gems. The a flat impromptu is beautiful, but difficult to get the sheet music of (i'm not even sure if it's in print). The best Poulenc playing i've heard is a cd by an italian pianist called Taccino (i think).
Btw you still on for our duel?

today is the first day i've had any REAL practice time.  yes.  perhaps i will reattach myself to the schubert.  finally put everything in a notebook so i don't have to shuffle pages.  i used to tape them in long sequences.  i don't have the schubert memorized yet - if that is what you are asking.  that would be three months.  just post what you have.  if i can't do any better right now - consider yourself having won.  then, we'll go on to some poulenc.

Poulenc may be a problem - i'm in china where you can't buy his music, and shipping it would cost a fortune. How about some scriabin? I'm learning the nocturne for the left hand, which you can find free online.
I have the schubert all memorized, but have yet to play the whole thing without fistfulls of wrong notes. I think i need to forget it and relearn it to really ingrain it, but i will send what i can on sep 1st.

you're IN CHINA?  are you serious.  you were in canada or somewhere's like that before, right?

scriabin nocturne for the left hand, you say.  ok.  i'll look at it tommorrow.  like you - i can't promise anything.  my left hand was and is a dud.  it never worked like my right hand.  no matter all the talking in the world.  pretty much my fourth finger.  probably from wearing a wedding ring if you ask me.  maybe i'll take it off and then try to play the thing - and put it back on again.  i'm always scared i'll lose it - but i think it's been hindering my fourth fingers circulation.  anywasy - it sounds better than 'the cat ate my music.'

right handed people typically have less strong left hands, right?

Women and the Chopin Competition: Breaking Barriers in Classical Music

The piano, a sleek monument of polished wood and ivory keys, holds a curious, often paradoxical, position in music history, especially for women. While offering a crucial outlet for female expression in societies where opportunities were often limited, it also became a stage for complex gender dynamics, sometimes subtle, sometimes stark. From drawing-room whispers in the 19th century to the thunderous applause of today’s concert halls, the story of women and the piano is a narrative woven with threads of remarkable progress and stubbornly persistent challenges.
