How do I change the file type of any file? For eg. change from MPEG to MP3, or from TIF to JPEG?

You can only do it with applications that support these formats. In the case of your images, if you have a graphics application that supports TIF and JPEG it should simply be a case of opening the TIF image and selecting the 'SAVE AS' option and select JPEG as the format.

MP3 is an MPEG file. Most people can't grasp this. MP3 simply means MPEG Audio Layer 3. So I don't know what you mean by changing it? Do you have a video clip and want to extract the audio and save it as an MP3? If this is the case, you would need an application that has an extract/export type function that allows you to save the audio only.

Yes, I didn't make my post clear enough. MP3 is an abbreviation of MPEG Audio Layer 3. If you have an MPEG video clip, the audio embedded within it is MP3. That is what I meant. What you want to do is extract the audio and save it as an independant file. You will need to find an application that can do this. It is not really a conversion, it is an extraction. Hope I have cleared it up a bit.

By "pissed" I assume you mean angry and not drunk? In any case, I am neither. An application which might be able to do what you want is Adobe premiere, but it is expensive. There may be other applications that people know about. I don't know of any. Try a search at download.com

I did a search for 'MP3 extractors' and it seems

COOL AUDIO EXTRACTOR 1.25

will do what you want. It's $25 to buy, but you may get a few free trials.

If you've got a file with an MPEG extension and it's audio only, you can just change the extension from .MPEG to .MP3 and any audio application should be able to open it. Try it. If it doesn't work you can always change back.

I would be amazed, no astonished, no...it would be a miracle if that worked. A files extension usually denotes the way it has been encoded and associates it with an application. An MPEG file that is 'just audio' means it is encoded as an MPEG 1 video file but has no video information. ie/black. What you suggest means you could convert a Bitmap image into a jpeg image simply by changing it's extension, or change a jpeg image into a Word Document by changing it's extension.

Yes, only if the architecture of the file is the same. But that is too complicated to explain in great detail. Suffice to say that if you changed a *.html file extension into *.txt then notepad will be able to view it. True, because html is basically just a txt file anyway. An MPEG file however is different to an MP3 file which is different to an AVI, WMV etc. BEST thing is NEVER change an extension unless you ABSOLUTELY AND COMPLETELY know what you are doing.
