RHYTHMIC PATTERNS ON PIANO
on: August 29, 2007, 12:11:52 PM
HI! MY NAME IS NIKOS AND I'M FROM GREECE. I PLAY PIANO FOR A FEW YEARS(ONLY CLASSICAL). NOW I WOULD LIKE TO PLAY ANOTHER KIND OF MUSIC (LIKE BLUES). AS FAR AS I'VE HEARD RHYTHMIC PATTERNS ARE A TOOL TO PLAY EVERY SONG. IS THIS TRUE? AND HOW CAN I LEARN THEM? IS THERE A BOOK?

                              THANKS,
                              NICK THE GREEK

Hmmm you should probably start out by listening to blues artists to begin with. You should get a good idea about the genre from that. Hmmm...try listening to some music by Jimmy Thackery. He's a great blues musician. He plays guitar but you can still get a good idea of the rhythmic structure of blues.

Also, try playing this blues chordal progression: Fmaj, Fmaj, Bbmaj, Bbmaj, Fmaj, Fmaj, Cmaj, Cmaj, Bbmaj, Bbmaj, Fmaj, Fmaj.

Each chord is repeated twice as you can see. Count it in 4/4 time signature like this:

1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and

Play the 1st chord for "1 and 2" and then play its repeated chord for the "and 3 and 4 and." Continue this rhythmic pattern for each different chord. Enjoy!

Once you get that down good you want to repeat the 3rd measure(which would be the second sequence of the F majors) and proceed on with the rest of the progression. That would be the traditional way of playing the standard blues major chord progression
