Well, sure, my first reaction to this: lol. But...

1. She is obviously very nervous and suffering from extreme stage fright.

2. I think back of many moments in my life where I thought that "stage fright" rather would kill me than I would be able to play one single decent note, let alone answer one single simple question.

3. She is *very* young

4. what does TV say about a person?

5. I don't watch any TV at all at the time, since quite a while, maybe exactly because I sense that it says nothing at all about how stupid or intelligent a person is or not is.

6. just my two cents :P :)

Nice try, but I doubt it very much. She wouldn't be in the competition in the first place if what you say is correct. No, she is a woman who never has, nor will ever need to depend on brains to get her through life....simple and true!

With 300,000,000 people in this country, I challenge you to find even one person who could represent us all.   ;)

Besides, her answer was correct--a lot of people really don't have maps.

More important than her answer... have you listened to the disturbing statistics in the question!? 1 in 5 Americans cannot locate the USA on a map!  :o :o

my experience is that the more "advanced" you are and the more you are exposed to expectations the more nervous you get. I was much more nervous at my second performing  examination than at the first. The "better" you get the more you are under pressure. But anyway, this whole "system" just more and more makes me sad. In Germany there have been quite a few cases of TV victims. Innocent unknown people whose reputation was ruined by some impertinent "TV comedy stars". They were getting traduced and embarraced just for "a little bit of fun". They lost their job. Their existence. They got hundreds of malicious calls from anonymous people until they had to move from their place and disappear somewhere under a different identity. That's what TV does to people. That's what society does to people. "Fun" society. Shallowness.

America is the least homogenous country on the planet.  We have such an incredibly diverse population that shocking statistics can be true without people in the mainstream realizing it.

Also, not everyone can read maps.  How many of us have been on a car  trip, handed the map to the person next to us, and asked them to navigate......only to have them tell us sorry, but I can't read maps?  That may not be the case for you or me, but if there were 5 of us in the car, likely one person would shy away from map reading duties.

Lol ;D And in the US I ran from pillar to post to get decent maps for my bike trip :o. I ended almost always up in asking people when I was in doubt about the way because almost all the maps I could get were just terrible :P and so was the signage on side roads. But so I got to know so many wonderful and nice people :) they might not always know the difference between Sweden and Switzerland but they helped me a lot, so often :)

Miss competitions are for sexist males. Miss teen competitions are for sexist pedophilic males.

If any teen boy with who find girls attractive could be considered pedophilic, then yes.

This is simply not fair.

The concept of these beauty contests them selves, are certainly up to debate.

I don't believe she had a moustache did she?  If she had one I'm sure she wouldn't have stumbled over her words.  In fact, I have never seen a Miss-Anything stumbled over words with a moustache.   ;D
I highly recommend that everyone at least tries growing a moustache.  It will do wonders for your piano playing.

It's usually fat ugly women who don't have a hope in heaven of winning a beauty competition that make comments like this. Probably out of spite and envy. It bothers me when loud outspoken minorities think they are speaking on behalf of the majority. I have nothing against 'Miss' competitions and I am neither sexist nor a paedophile. Just like I have nothing against dance competitions, quiz shows or song contests. There are many beautiful women who have nothing but their beauty to depend on and people like you want to deny them the opportunity to use their only gift! Would you rather they end up sweeping streets?

I do agree with this.

A few years back when there was talk of banning boxing in the UK, I wondered what would have become of Frank Bruno and Lennox Lewis if boxing did not exist as a paid sport. Perhaps they would have been road sweepers or drug dealers.

In life, we have to use the gifts that we have been given.

If you are beautiful, become a beauty queen or a high class hooker or perhaps marry a millionaire or sleep you way to the top. If you are good at beating people up, become a boxer & if you are good liar, join the Labour Party and become prime minister.

I personally believe that Miss South Carolina such as like some US Americans  ... does not ... have any idea  ... because if she did  have maps ... she like other US Americans ... such as like Nazi Germany ...would learn stuff about other places ... and not want to invade other countries such as like the Iraq and ... and such as like some US Americans she would learn that the US America is ... not the centre of the known universe ... is not building a better future ... for us.........

I teach English at an admittedly upper-scale/high-performing high school, but I've never had a student quite that dim! To be fair, she does seem to be terribly nervous. I understand that she subsequently appeared on the Today Show and was considerably more articulate.

I've seen that clip and all the poor girl does is parrot some insipid scripted response that she has memorised and repeated by rote. Even then the answer is just as vacuuous as her first one.

She explains her nonsensical original answer by saying she "didn't understand the question". Granted, it was a very complex one that surely the best brains in the world would have struggled with.

And thanks alistair, but it is only a fleeting appearance. I couldn't resist that one.
