Do you have to study to be a pianist?

To get really good and get famous for you piano playing, do you have to
study like 6 years? Is there famous pianists today that has no
formal education?

You must have developed musicality and technique that makes people want to listen and watch you play piano... I don't know of too many people who can say they've accomplished an acceptible level of either without formal education to some degree.  I also don't know of anyone that could say they've been able to attain that level of proficiency with only 6 years of study...

What i meant to ask was can someone without about 6 years or so at a higher education school (university) become a succesful pianist? People can come far with a private teacher??

yes, you can go far without going to university and just studying under a private teacher but your teacher has to know enough and prefebly still be an active pianist.

I know I could go really far just alone on private lessons, even my teacher knows that as i'm already learning pieces that they would teach you when you do a B.A degree but my teacher said she still reccomends that I go to music school next year. I'm not going to stop my private lessons though...
