1923 Heintzman Co. piano - how much is it worth?
on: September 07, 2007, 09:26:10 PM
I recently bought a 1923 Heintzman Co. upright piano.  It's definately not in perfect condition, there are small chips at almost every corner, but it sounds like new.  I was just wondering if anyone knows how much it's worth?

Heres a picture:

I actually just noticed as I was taking the picture, but that white line below the keys seems to be paint transfer that happened when I was bringing the piano inside my house.

I am certainly no expert but I read some very flattering comments about this brand of piano on another forum.
Do not discount its worth until you get professional advice.
have a Blessed day!

Pianos this old are basically worth something only if they are one of the top german/american brands, Steinway, Bechstein, Bösendorfer, Blüthner etc.

If it's well built, and don't have any serious cracks in the soundboard, wrestplank, bridges, it's of course worth to pay for a full restoration, even if there's no market for selling it later. For your own enjoyment!

Best thing to do now is probably to have a tuner come and tune it and see what else can be done to it.

This website does online piano valuations. It'll cost you $20US. It's worth considering though.

I have myself a junk Heintzman, half of the shanks are broken off.  It still has full bodied tone though, and keeps tune despite it's extremely beat up state.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Heintzman pianos were top brand Canadian pianos. The older models are beautiful instruments, in general. I myself own a baby grand. The company is presently no longer Canadian, and I know little about modern Heintzman pianos.

An old Heintzman  baby grand (6 ft.) in a retail store would go for about $20,000+ (refinished). Your upright, refinished is worth a few thousand (maybe four). However, the rebuilding might cost you three grand. I would also recommend to have an expert technician look at it. The best that I, as a pianist, can do is estimate based on experience, rather than expertise. Good luck!
