Teaching as a 19 year old student?
on: September 08, 2007, 02:17:21 PM
I am my self 19 years old, but to earn some money I would like to have a few students.
Do you think it is possible that someone of 19 year already gives some lessons?
I am now going to start conservatory.
Currently learing:
- Chopin: Ballade No.3
- Scriabin: Etude Op. 8 No. 2
- Rachmaninoff: Etude Op. 33 No. 6
- Bach: P&F No 21 WTC I

Yes, absolutely you should start teaching now.

If you are about to enter a conservatory, then you play well enough to teach.  19 is a perfect age I think.  Obviously you will not be taking advanced students until a little later, but it will be great for you to teach children of beginning to intermediate levels.  The experience will help you tremendously.  If you have the opportunity, try to observe more experienced teachers start their beginner students.  It will save you a lot of wasted time.

I started teaching at 20.  It is a great time to start.  Go for it.  Bottom line in my opinion, you don't know how to teach until you do it.

I've known accomplished musicians that were teaching at 16.  Teaching always enhances your own knowledge because it puts it in a different perspective, that of someone who has a different collection of information.  You have to always explain it in different ways.

Plus, if you start now, any challenges that arise you can mention to your professors at the conservatory, and it will give you an opportunity to get closer to them, and learn more at your school.

You are more than ready. Now is time to learn what you know, and what you need to know. Nothing more rewarding than to shape other peoples' lives in a positive way (and get paid for it.) ;)

What has age got to do with it? If you know your stuff then you should have no fear in teaching, if you rely on a book (and simply keep one lesson ahead of them) then I hope all your students run for the hills ;) I started partime teaching with a small number of students at 16. When you first start teaching it is hard and you have to learn a lot, no matter how many teaching degrees you have. When it comes to music each student is different and you have to learn how to deal with that, this only comes with experience, you might as well do that as early as possible.

At 19 you'd do well teaching kids up to about age 12 - they really connect with people in your age group.

Adults might have difficulty taking a 19yo seriously (no offence).

My son is teaching and he's 16 the kids enjoy him and it has taught him a lot about his drumming but also about being responsible - he enjoys the cash too, ;) just make it realistic considering you are still youngish and learning

it has nothing to do with age...it has to do with how much you know, whether you think that you have enough knowledge about music and the piano to start teaching.

I started teaching when I was 19 too  :D

Depend on your physical appearance. There are 19 years old who look like 25 or 27 year old.

Anyway, don't worry, it is only kind of weird at the beginning. Once they take lesson from you once, if they like your teaching style, you will have no problem, eventhough, you look like a 12 year old boy.  keep in mind, that there can be rejection too. However, regardless your age, rejection can happen to anybody.

Start teaching. Maturity, knowledge and expertise count for much more than your age. Good luck.
