What to expect in a lower-division music major
on: September 26, 2007, 01:27:44 AM
I am considering getting an Associate of Arts degree in music, at a local community college.  I have played piano for almost ten years and have taught beginners for three, but I feel that I need more training if I am to be a really competent teacher.  I know there are gaps in my music knowledge and playing ability, and so far it has not been too big of a problem in my teaching, since I have a good understanding of the things I teach at the beginning level.

I am wondering, what should I expect in a lower-division music major?  My college emphasizes theory and ear training (the areas in which I need the most help), and all students are required to play or sing in an ensemble.  If you have received an AA degree in music, what were your experiences as far as practice time, classes, what you hope to do with the degree, etc.  And if you received a Bachelor's degree in music, what were the first two years?

I have no desire to become a professional pianist.  My only reason for getting a music degree would be to help me become a better, more knowledgeable and competent music teacher, as well as to improve my personal enjoyment of music.

Thank you for any input!
