Lessons in harmony?
on: September 30, 2007, 08:06:10 PM
I see my teacher for 30 minutes officially every week, it usually turns into an hour. We work on repertoire.
I asked her yesterday whether we could do something that would help me to compose, give me an idea on the theory needed etc.

She said, yes we can, but that it would necessitate another half hour of lessons every week for lessons on harmony.

Obviously more lessons means more money. Something I don't mind paying if there is true merit in this idea.

Please advise if you think it is a sound offer.

Focusing on theory or composition sounds good.

You could "skip" the usually piano lesson for that week and do a theory focused lesson.  Keep the same time slots.  Same time.  Same fee.

After awhile lessons can tend to become the same old thing.  Skipping one now and then doesn't have a huge negative effect.

Although... you may want to find a full theory or composition person for those type of lessons.  A piano teacher is ok, depending on the level.  My "typical piano teacher" in my head doesn't quite cut it for serious composition though.  Because it's not quite their area.  Not all, but I think most aren't focused in on composition so much.  You might be better finding a new person to take those type of lessons with.

Thanks Bob.

I do know she is a very good and well respected piano teacher here. So I don't doubt her ability to teach theory/composition. Though I agree with you 100% about the "typical piano teacher" not being apt for this sort of thing.. I have done my work and made sure she is not that, Had enough of those thanks:P

I will consider it and see what transpires. Many thanks Bob. Have a wonderful day.
