where did christopher columbus land?
on: October 09, 2007, 06:49:56 AM
i thought it was all worked out.  he first landed in the new world at long bay, san salvador.  hmm.  now, we find out it's just a guess?  or was there any archeological proof or anything?  there are several monuments to columbus in san salvador.  which one is correct?

Some of us might be inclined to ask "why" rather than "where"...

he couldn't believe the natives were walking around naked and had to see for himself?

there was a natural harbor.  they needed to rest.

he was inspired to stop by the natural flow of the oceans currents to that particular spot.

they wanted fresh water and thought they saw a lake?

his men felt the compass needle no longer pointed north - and fearing his men - he landed at the soonest most suitable spot to regain a sense of direction.  (nevermind the north star and path of the sun).

an annual pension of ten thousand maravedies promised by the Queen for first discovered land.

totally attributed to two pelicans which landed on the 'santa maria.'

the winds failed to bring them all the way to the continent, which was columbus goal, and instead landed them in the bahamas.

it was all martin alonzo's fault.  he convinced columbus to sail southwest instead of continue on a westerly course.  thus instead of reaching the mainland first - they reached the islands.

I think it is still debated where he actually landed and any evidence is still argued over. I guess we could probably narrow it down to a certain area, but not an actual beach.

Anyway, he was not the first to make the journey although he had a far greater effect on the local population.

Yes old chap, i think a lot of historians accept that it was Leif Erikson. The great ocean going longboats of the vikings would have been more than capable of hopping from Norway, Faroes, Iceland, Greenland, North America.

It is also just about possible that some Irish monks made the journey some 400 years earlier, but that is really lost in the mists of time.

I am referring to St Brendan my little Pa Prophetess and his legendary voyage.

Back in the 70's someone built a leather clad boat and sailed to Newfoundland from UK to show St Brendans voyage was possible. Lets face it, some pretty strange craft have crossed the Atlantic.

Going via the Shetlands, Faroes, Iceland and Greenland was shown to be feasable for even a small craft.

You are also wrong. I believe that it was first discovered by Northern Asians thousands of years ago.

Well you are all wrong.

The Celestial Teapot was there first.  :)

And he bred with a female Teapot, and the Teapotian race was born.  8)

Yes of course you are right.

I was talking about Europeans. Actually I wish the Europeans had never gotten to America...

Wrong, it was discovered by a trylobite in 630 million BC.

If that's true, it would suggest that the earth is actually more than 6,000 years old; well, wow!
