Believe it or Not
on: October 11, 2007, 05:26:08 AM
This thread is for true stories of amazing feats and things, involving ourselves and those we know.

Okay.  A good while back I was playing Trivial Pursuit with my family and my turn came up.  Here was my question:

Who was the first person on the cover of People?

Now, I had no idea.  But I wanted to get the answer right sooo bad.  So I thought and thought, probably a long time as I am apt to do in that game, and then this person came to me, and I gave my answer:    "Mia Farrow"

And it was right.  :o  :)

was listening to the radio yesterday (my daughter's station) and some guy comes on and starts talking about the most unbelievable things to him.  one was the maury povich show where women get dna tests to prove paternity.  more likely than not - the father is completely unrelated.  how these people have the nerve to go through with it all was a 'believe it or not' moment for him.

for me - the most unbelievable thing is unlocking the van and getting to the door and it locks itself again.  so, i find out from the neighbor that noone is sabotaging me - it's a feature of honda cars/vans.  they lock themselves again after 30 seconds or so.  what seems strange to me is that this feature was not so apparrent for long periods of time.  it's a sporadic feature and typically only happens when i am in a hurry.

I have one of those flashes of inexplicable brilliance in Trivial Pursuit as well.

The question was: What is Gertrude Ederle's claim to fame?

I had never heard of her and took a wild guess and said "She was the 1st woman to swim across the English Channel"

-Correct!

My sister was reluctant to let me have it because it was an utter fluke.

That does not surprise me at all.
It often happens in math, i don't pay attention, suddenly there was a difficult calculation with huge numbers (millions), i just wildly guessed and it was correct. In a test, i didn't care, wrote i-don't-know-what and it was correct. I wrote many tests and guessed many times...
That happens pretty often with me (not only math, but everything).
