Audition Advice?
on: October 13, 2007, 05:41:59 PM
So...after much back and forth, ive decided to just go for it!  (to cut a long story short)
Most music colleges around here want pretty much the same standard
(Florida State Uni.  Florida International Uni. etc.)

I. A Prelude and Fugue
II.  Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn Sonata (etc..)
III. Substantial Romantic period work
IV. 20th century work

I think i've got the 20th century work covered with maybe.. Debussy's Passepied or Prelude(Suite Bergamasque), or jardins sous la pluie..(i promise, i dont rush it unnecessarily :D)
I have my ideas about the Prelude & Fugue and Sonata requirements(Haydn's op. 49? already know the 3rd movement), but my main question is, what would classify as 'substantial' for the Romantic works? something like Liszt's Valse Oubliee? (pretty much completed) or a Chopin Mazurka?..(i doubt that one lol..)

As far as my ability is concerned, my main goal is musicality. I pay the most attention to that during practice. However I'm only just now grasping how to actually use my body and hands so I've only recently become grounded technically (how to practice and not be in pain for the hour afterwards ;D, focusing on the knuckles, posture etc.) so im still developing on that point...
I may end up delaying auditioning and just entering college as a different major while developing some more because my schoolwork is probably going to interfere...
So...any advice? ^^"

maybe you should take a year off and just practise because trust me, it does make a huge difference. I have done that for a year already, still intend to do it for 1 more yr before going to music school.

i'm learning haydn's sonata no.49 too...but almost done with it, just polishing it up for a competitions.

yea it seems that I'm likely to delay music and just go in undecided or something.. idk. I hate the concept of stretching myself out for work i have no interest in, but it seems that is necessary sometimes.
good luck on 49 ^^

I don't think either the Liszt or a Chopin Mazurka would be considered a substantial Romantic work.  Think along the lines of a Chopin Ballade or Scherzo, Schumann Kreisleriana or Faschingsschwank aus Wien, Liszt Ballade or Funerailles, complete later opus (116, 118, 119) of Brahms.

You should see the suggestions I got in one of my posts because I was asking for advice as well.

I'm playing for auditions:
Bach - WTC Book 2 P+F in G-major
Beethoven - Waldstein
Chopin - Scherzo #2
Debussy - Estampes, La Soiree dans Grenade
Chopin - Etude Opus 10 No 8

Wow, how lucky you are for one year only playing piano. Are you trying to get in to Julliard or Curtis?

nope,i'm not trying to get into either one. I'm going to try to get into the vancouver academy of music, it's really hard to get in and you really have to work you butt off  :P .
the reason why I took a year off is because I did'nt get in when I auditioned in spring 2006. anyway I just decided to take another year off because I want to compete before I apply again and since i'm doing my ARCT performer's I have to get all those history, harmony, counterpoint and analysis exams done if I wanna graduate so...yeah

Glad you're getting to advance. I was just checking your site out a second ago actually ^^ awesome selections. My repertoire is quite meager  :-\  but it will probably get better eventually. Good luck in the competitions. Keep us posted.

as promised, i'm keeping all of you updated about my competitions this nov.

My teacher has recived my program for Richmond Music Fest. My competitive class is on the 21st and non-competitive on the 22nd. It is very hard work, this being my 1st competition, and i'm practically working my butt off because i really want to achieve something from it. There's always some new ideas to add to my pieces when I go for my 2hr lessons once/twice weekly and it is really tiring  :P Apparently i'm good and playing Beethoven and it fits me really well... anyway 23 days more to go

I am myself getting ready for DMA auditions, along with recitals and other concerts. To give you an idea, here is what I will be playing for the DMA auditions:

1. Haydn,Sonata in B-flat major,Hob 16/2

2. Liszt,Ballad #2 in B minor

3.Carter Pann, "Fantasy-Inventions"

I will also bring back one of my Bach Prelude and Fugue as Baroque

 ;D
competed yesterday.
I played Passepied and Ivan's Song (from Ivan's Adventures) . So I'm pretty excited.
One of the people there may help me get a better teacher :) very cool.
I got rated 'superior' (5/5) in all, but it was judged on an individual standard, so the judge probably wasn't that critical.
Another thing I learned is that my 'technique' has to have some sort of base consistency so that I'm not so lost when I have to use an unfamiliar piano, so I've been focusing on that and working it out.

I am myself getting ready for DMA auditions, along with recitals and other concerts. To give you an idea, here is what I will be playing for the DMA auditions:

1. Haydn,Sonata in B-flat major,Hob 16/2

Thanks for the list :) listening to them right now.
