Best VG soundtracks
on: October 23, 2007, 06:14:03 AM
Since we have a best movie soundtrack thread, how bout a best video game one?

For NES, I dunno if anyone here remembers Crystalis, but it was one of those sort of cult RPG staples of the Nintendo.  I just randomly started listening to the NSF, which is like the extraction of the sound off the rom, and christ.  Bizarre sh*t.  Polyrhythmic, bitonal, quarter-tones, and a fugue?  Plus it's really old-school synthy so it's really creepy almost to listen to >>  Of course can't discount Castlevania III or Megaman 4 for other old-school stuff.

As far as after that goes, definitely Legend of Mana.  Complete MP3's are available online; nothin more needs to be said after hearing the opening.  All of the music on Legend of Mana was actually recorded with live orchestra and electronics.  As if the game wasn't already good enough (graphics are also one of the most stunning I've ever seen in a game; all hand-drawn) it made the game even better.

Just check the first track from the OST.

Yes?  I'd say VIII has the best music of the PSX releases.

I don't care if it's not original, but my vote is for Grand Theft Auto; Vice City and San Andreas.
