Search Function Request
on: October 26, 2007, 03:19:03 PM
I am wondering if a feature could be added to the search function.  I have seen this on other forums so I know it's possible, I just don't know how difficult it is to add this feature.

I would like to know if we could have the word(s) we have searched for be highlighted within the posts/text that we find on the subject we have searched for ?

I think the search function is working pretty good at the time, and it is certainly a bit better than it used to be.  Sometimes though, I just wish we could have the feature added that I have described above in order to expedient the process of finding the info we are looking for.

Thanks,
m1469  :)

This feature is already in place.
When the search results are displayed the keywords are red and in bold font while the other words are white or blue.

Could you specify what search settings you use to be able to not get the keywords highlighted?
BTW, what web browser do you use?

Oh, wow, thank you for your quick response !  :)  I use "internet explorer" (is that a web browser ?).

I have indeed noticed that the words are highlighted in the list of results, but I haven't found it in the actual text of a speific thread that I might click on from the results list.

My most recent search was as follows :

*advanced search*

*search for* : dystonia
*by user* : bernhard (in every field (nothing unchecked))

and I get this :

[edit] for some reason if I try to post the link to the actual search results, the link does not display the search results.  However, it is as you describe above, the word I look for is in red and the rest of the text is blue.

However, when I click on the thread that contains this word (when I click on one of the actual search result threads/links), it just brings me to the post (which is great) but the word I searched for is not highlighted within the text of the post.  For example :

https://www.pianostreet.com/smf/index.php/topic,2998.msg27023.html#msg27023

I do not see a highlighted word in the actual text of the post, and as you can see (if your's is not highlighted), finding the section of a post like this where it applies very directly to the search word can take a bit of time.   So, I am wondering then, in this case, if the word "dystonia" could have been highlighted within the actual text of that post by Bernhard.

Thanks :).

OK, now I see what you mean.  :)
I have never seen the feature as you describe it but it would indeed be practical. Could you link to an example?

Anyway, here are some workarounds that will make your PS life easier:

- If you check "show results as messages" you will see the full posts with kewords highlighted.

- When you click from the results page there is no highlighting since you are leaving the search section and viewing a normal forum topic page. You can then hit Ctrl + F and search for the keword on that page. In Internet Explorer this will highligh the keywords one at a time but you can easily check though a long page by pushing "Enter" repeatedly.

- For those using the web browser Firefox there is also and option for Ctrl + F to higlight all matches on the page. Get firefox here:

Okay, thank you very much.  The only place I could remember off the top of my head is da sdc  :-[.  I did a search there on "piano" without changing any settings (so maybe it's set up already like you explain) and then I click on a specific part of the results (it wasn't obvious at first where to click), and this is what I get :

https://www.dasdc.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10355&highlight=piano

(if you scroll through the thread you will see the words highlighted, though I noticed that if I try to link to a specific post, the highlight goes away.  So, apparently there is more to this, which I don't yet understand  :P).

Thanks for your help :).

So far I have mainly just used this suggestion out of the ones you have offered and I just wanted to say that it has been very helpful.  Thank you :).

As said earlier, I find the Firefox highlight function quite helpful in such situations.

Also PS uses SMF, da SDC uses phpBB.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach
